cable quality for Quad switches

Hi, I've got my quad connected to a rockman midi octopus using just some cheap speaker cable to do channel switching. I was wondering if the cable should be better quality as I dont know if they actually run signal??

I don't think it really matters since you are not using it as an audio path BUT I'm not sure if speaker cables would be safe...?
