My GC doesn't stock the Maxon OD808, or Fulltone, or even TS 808....only the TS-9 :?

Well, your GC sucks then... Some do though, so if you want to "buy and try" like siggy mentioned, just have them have one shipped from another store. Probably just take a few days.

You can order the OCD online.

Post a poll!

I was never really into OD pedals, but decided about 6 months ago to start looking into them again.

I used to own the Zakk Wylde OD pedal. To me, that pedal just created more hiss and noise. I sold it shortly after buying it several years ago.

So this go around, I read a lot about OD pedals (especially on this board) and narrowed it down to the Maxon 808 and the Fulltone OCD.

It's funny you guys mentioned the GC 30-day cash back deal. I went there first rather than the privately owned joints I normally go to. I was planning on buying one or both, and taking the other one or both back if I didn't like them. Well true to form for Guitar Center, they didn't have either, nor did they know when/if they would receive any, nor did they know if another store had them, etc. One of many reasons why I hate Guitarget.

So I went to National Speaker and Sound in Denver (bought my Roadster head and two PRS guitars from them....great guys!) where I should have started my search to begin with. They had both the Maxon 808 and the OCD so I got to try both extensively.

Although I own two DR's, I test drove them through a Stiletto Ace head and 4x12 cab. I played both for at least 20 minutes apiece trying out different settings, etc. By the time I was done, I was no longer on the fence. The OCD was the hands down winner IMO. To me, the 808 sounded like everything else I had experienced with other OD pedals, and probably part of the reason I wasn't a big fan of them up until now. I know a lot of guitar players use the 808 with great results, just wasn't my cup of tea.

The OCD works very well for my applications. I play in a one-guitar, hard rock cover band. I use the OCD for solos to give my sound a bit more attack, punch and clarity, but it doesn't suck my tone at all. On some songs that we play with a lot of quick, alternate picking and no clean, mellow parts, I will leave the OCD on for the whole song.

Overall I've been very pleased with the OCD since I have bought it. It has given me that extra little something I didn't have before, and has proven to be very beneficial for me as the only guitar player in my band.

cheap boosts: Ibanez TS9

more $$$ but better: Maxon OD820 (re-released now as the maxon VOP9) or even better, the Barber LTD (mmmm, goodness)

Am I the only one using a boss sd-1 to boost a dual rec? haha..
maybe I should try a ts-9...

+1 for OCD, though I can't say for sure about the TS9, never tried an actual one, just what the digitech simulator called a ts9.

But ever since I bought the 2x12 recto cab, I find it unnecessary.

I'm using a RK1, so I am not sure how it compares with a straight dual rec.

But if I go channel 4 on modern, Gain 1:30, Treble 12:30, Mids 10:00, Bass 11:00, presence 9:00, channel volume 9:00, it's extremely tight! I just plug straight in.

I went into GC a few weeks ago and found a dual rec setup with the low channel volume and it was a chugga chugga muted palm beast!

Unfortunately once everyone goes to bed, I can't do modern. It's to loud. So then I just go vintage and use the OCD.

The thing I love about the OCD is that it does not color your tone.

I found with the Tube screamer (simulators anyway) it really colored the tone. Muted palm sounded great but chords lost there recto roar.

OCD didn't color it at all, especially if you left it in LP with the tone at 12:00, volume at 3:00 and the distortion off!

My one and only gripe about the OCD is the distortion. I don't like the sound of it at all.

For me they could just remove the know entirely as I never use the OCD distortion.

It does it's job well simply as a volume boost

You're not alone. I keep a TS9 layin' around for something different. But I find the TS9's have a midrange hump that colors the tone a bit. I find the Barber LTD, Voodoo Lab Overdrive and OCD pedals don't color the tone but give you the oomph.

Sorry primerib.
This the the Boss SD-1 lonely club.

LOL. Guess I have TS on the brain today. I have a SD1 but it acts differently from many ODs. My mate says the SD1 is asymmetrical clipping whereas most others are symmetrical clipping and that is why I don't like the sound. What??? I don't know the difference between the 2 clipping circuits, but the SD1 is good, the TS9 is good (except the midrange hump) but they are very different. To each his own.

stock TS9 for me.

thinking of trying either the maxon OD808 or the fulltone OCD.

I just picked up a maxon od808... holy crap.

My 2ch DR just SCREAMS now. Even with the distortion all the way off. A little eq tweaking and it's a monster. All my harmonics just FLY off the board, pinched or natural.
I've also noticed I get more sustain in my solos. I have a boss ns-2 and without a super expensive switching system, it's left on all the time, killing some much needed sustain. Leaving the od808 on gives me most of what I've lost. Definitely tightened the amp up.
