I now have a couple of Thiele cabs with an EVM 12Ls and an extension cab and Combo with Black Shadow MC-90s. Using them with a Mark IIC+ really gives very different results. I am not sure how much of it is the cabinet or the speakers but the best way to describe it is that the Thiele with EVM 12L sounds very accurate and direct so that there is little distortion/blurring across frequencies. This is sort of like high end studio monitors when you want a flat response with little coloration. This is most noticible with the low end and when running modulation and delay based stomps. The Celestion is more colored and has a warmth to it that blurs the frequencies some but in a pleasing way. This reminds me of a high end HiFi speaker that just makes everything sound good. This is most noted with overdriven tones. I am going to try putting the MC-90 in the Thiele and seeing how it differs from the MC-90 that is in the combo on my IIC+. Now I need to figure out which one I like best! I probably need both!

Hi,

My is a MK IV combo loaded with the Black Shadow EVM 12 L. What I like often to do, is to use the combo in combination with a 1x12 open back cab, loaded with the MC 90 or also with a V 30. So one gets best of both worlds in my opinion.

The EVM 12 L with it's tight, accurate tone and the MC 90, with it's more
colored kind of rock / blues tone as you say. Also much more 3-D tone, IMO

I tried the Celestion MC-90 in the Thiele and it still was just as warm sounding with not as clear note definition as the EVM. Running the two together was a bit odd sounding. Seemed like the EVM, with it's more defined output, overpowered the Celestion. Also noticed that they had completely different breakup characteristics. It definitely gave a 3D sound but it just did not seem balanced running both through the 4ohm outputs of the IIC+.

I think I am leaning towards the sound of the EVM 12Ls in the hardwood Thiele cabs. Just like very accurate studio monitors, the Thieles with the EVMs just seemed to allow me to hear more of the guitar/effects tone. I was really impressed with how the BJF Honey Bee going into my Zendrive and a bit of delay from my Keeley Mod AD-9 really added a nice warm quality while still retaining good note separation and a tone that benefited from the full and balanced frequency range of the EVMs. This was especially sweet with my Strats and Tele. The Eternity/COT 50 was magical with my Les Pauls going into the EVMs and the Landgraff DO kills regardless of what speakers or guitars I use!

This is purely subjective because both speakers sound so different and it is about one's individual tone. It does however emphasize the role that speakers play. I am probably going to keep my Mark III (blue stripe) in a combo cab with a Celestion MC-90 and an extension cab with the same speaker for when I want a warmer sounding amp.

Thanks for listening!

I have a similar responce when running my 1x12 combo (EVM 12L) and Recto 4x12 (V30s)......the combo dominates the 4x12.

But.....I've found that when I stand far enough back (20ft+) the two blend really well. It can sound bad in close, but once you put some distance you can hear how well they compliment each other.

Of course, some of you guys are talking Thieles.....I have no experince with them.
