Hey fellas. Long story short... been into the whole NOS tube rolling lately and bought a bias meter to make matched pairs and such. Anyhow, I first tested my winged 34`s I`ve been running lately from the tubestore (bias point 35) to get a sample. Here`s what they tested at: 58,73,70,67. One of them was slightly red plating. Then tried some used sylvania 6ca7`s 68,98,80,52. Next my beloved set of matched Mesa branded 6ca7`s
65,93,88,63. WTF is going on here!!! Those numbers are WAY TOO HIGH. I popped in my winged 6l6`s from Doug and they read at 30,41,38,30. Stock green label mesa`s 35,42,48,33. So I dont believe the meter is at fault here cause the 6l6`s are in spec. I went ahead, out of curiosity, and mixed mesa 6l6 outer, winged 34 inner (one of which was the red plating el34) and heres what I got 36,20,28,35 (6l6 setting). Any idea whats happening in EL34 mode? Is this a factory fault that made its way past QC? Any help appreciated. Sure glad I didnt fry my mesa 6ca7`s........

Nobody... :( I wonder if not using mesa branded el34`s has anything to do with it. BUT, the tube store =c= 34`s are supposed to be in spec with mark v. Hmmmmm

I wish I could help. I've never checked the bias on my amp, nor have I had any problems with it. Maybe some else will drop in with some advise. Good luck.

Well, Ive narrowed it down to el34 setting in full power only. Variac power, the bias in 34 setting holds steady. Off to the tech.... yaaaaa

Same problem.
I didn't have mesured it for now but my Mesa's 416 (6CA7) are redplating and... smells like cooked fish (WTF ?).
So I put back the 440's and flipped the switch to "6L6" back and absolutely no pb.

If you have your amp checked by a tech I'd love to have some feedback.

Havent taken it in to the nearest certified mesa tech (3.5 hr drive) yet. Been gigging alot and now headed to the studio. Running the good old =c= 6l6`s for now. Hopefully get it to a tech in a few weeks. Mesas` opinion over the phone- possibly a leaky resistor.

Put the meter in yesterday. My STR-416 are running 56ma, so about 100% idle dissipation..... I really enjoy EL34 in that amp, so I hope a brand new set will be ok...
