H Y'all;
I'm new to the Boogie Board.
So I hope I'm posting this question in the right spot...
I just picked up an Express 5:50. great amp. However, I'm wondering what a ' different / replacement ' speaker might do for it ???
I'm a fan of the "Billy Gibbons Tone". So what speaker would work well in this amp to help give me that; [ as Dr.Z would say ] - "Billy-in-a-Box" sound ???
I'm thinking of Tone Tubbys, or Webers, 'Celestions', Etc...
Thanks for any input.
KABONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :?:

Right. I've heard of Scumbacks, but don't know anything about them or the Austins... As for Celestions, I just realized after I posted that the stock Black Shadow C 90 in the amp IS a Celestion isn't it ? At least I think they're made by Celestion for Boogie ???

You are correct. The speaker should have a Mesa label on it, and say something along the lines of "Made by Celestion".

I could be wrong, but I think the C90 is exclusive to Boogie products only. As in I've never seen a C90 for sale on the Celestion site. You can buy them from the Boogie store, though.

Depends what you want.

After doing a quick google search, this popped up.

You have always had fabulous tone. What amps and guitars did you use on ZZ Top's first few albums?

Thanks very much. We have been fortunate to enjoy the luxury of a spot-on crew, and we've maintained an archive of each instrument, amp, drum kit and ancillary devices used on each track. It's all on record, and any piece of gear can be lifted from the vault for most particular sounds. At the heart of almost everything we've done, however, is Pearly Gates run through either a Marshall or an old Fender. That simple-but-deadly combination is still tough to beat.

This sounds like a tone a Celestion G12m - 25 or G12H - 30 could do fairly well. I hear those Scumback H75s have a similar tone to this.

Depends on the Celestion.

ya your right pre-rola celestions come close :lol:

I have a Celestion G12 , 16 OHm, "Vintage 30" kicking around. Would it work with 5:50? ...Or would it blow up because it's only rated at 30 watts ?

Vintage 30s are rated at 60 watts.

Ok.

G12T - 75 is the 'high wattage' version of a G12m - 25 and
Vintage 30 is the 'high wattage' version of a G12H - 30.

While the high wattage versions are similar in sound, they really have their own voice. The v30s tend to be very tight like a c90, but they are much more mid heavy with a bite in the high end. They won't give you that smooth blues breakup you want. A G12m - 25 or a G12H - 30 would be better for that. You'd just have to build an extension cab to run when you use the amp on the 50watt mode. What you COULD do is put a G12m- 25 Greenback Reissue OR a G12m Heritage (built to pre - rola specs and costs an arm and a leg) in the combo. You can run that in the combo and you can have a G12H - 30 or a Vintage 30 in the extension cab. Build a close back cab or a thiele cab. There are specs for that on this board.

The G12H 30 or the V30 both have a higher sensitivity (100db / watt / metre) than the G12m -25 or G12m Heritage ( 97 & 96 DB / watt / metre) so when you use the combo only, you can get good tone at a relatively quiet level but when you want to do a big show, you bust out the tight extension cab that has the high sensitivity speaker in it and behold, your rig is twice as loud.
This would be an extremely flexible sounding setup. I personally would go with a V30 extension cab because I love the tightness of the v30 combined with the creaminess of the Greenback. I'd also build a thiele cab because it has a massively extended bass response compared to a close back 1 x 12 which, in my opinion, sounds tinny.

Hope this helps. If you want, I'll link you to the 1 x 12 cab build plans and the build project threads so you can see some of the Marvelous DYI work out here.

[edit] I just realized that with a 5 / 50 watt amp, you'd need at least a 25 watt speaker if you were going to run an extension cab as well while using both speakers, unless you swapped to the extension cab alone and loaded it with a high power handling speaker. G12H - 30 / V30 speaker combo is also nice. Dr Z says the phat bass of the G12H - 30 really balances the mid heaviness of the V30 nicely. My brother bought a G12H Heritage for his Lonestar special and he said the amp went from dark and muddy to open, clear, and very warm. He said it was a huge improvement. He uses a 4 x 12 when running the amp super loud. (He also has a Red Bear MK60 for high gain stuff)

Hey Yellowjacket;
Thanks for all that insightful info !!! It sounds like you've really got a handle on all these speakers !
I should've let you [all] know though that I'm a strictly 'play at home' player. So I won't be going out to do any 'big shows' as you'd mentioned Yellowjacket...
& yes, I realize that a 5:50 is WAY more than what I need for home use. The thing is that I bought this amp 'barely' used. It was bought new at Xmas time, then I just picked it up from the guy last week for only $800.00 CDN$ !!! I KNOW !!!!CRAZY HUH ?!?!?!? ( That's probably about $700.00 USD$ for a 2 month old Express 5:50 !!!)
I just couldn't pass it up !
I was actually looking for a used 1-12" Express 5:25; but there just aren't any used ones around here yet. Then I read in a few forums that they actually sound 'smaller / boxier' than the larger 5:50 so I thought "What the heck- Go for it ! & No regrets !!!
Now back to the subject at hand...Knowing that I d only play at home, & would like to achieve those "Billy Gibbons Tones"; but at lower volumes; what would work best for me?
I have a woodworking business, so an extension cab will definitely be built Yellowjacket. Could you please send me the link to the plans you'd mentioned ?
I think my intention will be not to run both speakers 'together', but rather separately for different 'sounds/tones'. Maybe leave the stock Black Shadow in the combo cab then put the "Billy in a Box" type speaker in the lower extension cab.
Does this make sense to you ?

Thanks;
El-Kabong !!!

Has anybody tried the Celestion G12H-100?
How does it compare with the C90 and the V30?
Thanks in advance!

I like the stk speaker a lot still, Ii tried out most of the celestions, that you mention ( I love celestion speakers) but, in the end I went with a eminence red fang, which at the time was $150, I think they have gone up in price since then. The red fang IMHO works great in this amp.

I think Red Fangs are the 'preferred' speaker for Dr.Z's "Billy in a Box" Monza. So with that in mind, would it be a safe assumption that a Red Fang is what I should be looking for in my 5:50 as an extension speaker cab ???

Maybe hunt down and try a Thiele first? They sound pretty huge for a 1 x 12 but not everyone likes them. Also, keep in mind that the cab influences tone as well as the speaker in it. (At least in terms of highs, mids and lows. The thiele has a huge low end and a very flat response)

You could swap out the c90 for a v30 in the combo and see what you think. It is always very easy to put it back in.

If you insist on Scumbag, check out Weber's Legacy Line of speaker.

Weber used to supply Scumbag speakers to their specification. But there was a fall-out and Scumbag went with another supplier. Since "Scumbag design speaker" was not their proprietary product, Weber came out with Legacy line of speakers.

igfraso, is the G12H-100 a Celestion Sidewinder? To me my Sidewinder sounds like a G12-75T but handles more wattage. Someone on this board likes them. I would sell mine $75 + shipping.

I don't know how a Celestion Sidewinder looks. This one has a white and black sticker with a Celestion G12H-100 legend.

I put an Austin Speaker Works KTS 60 in the Express 5 25 and the amp came alive - The Celestion Vintage 30 is not the speaker it used to be. The ASW is smooth and sounds like a broken in speaker out of the box - The Vintage 30 was harsh and sounded awful in burn and crunch mode - The ASW truly makes this amp sing.

Just taking a stab but did you break in the V30? They can sound harsh when new but they need a number of hours to break in. They smooth out over time. I have a Recto cab (2 x V30's) and it's still a little harsh but getting better and better.
