I have a 2x12 Tremoverb with the Black Shadows. I'm looking to add another extension cab to the rig.
I'd like to go closed back and my choices for portability are another 2x12 or a 4x10 Marshall with Celestion G35L's which I can get a deal on. I'm playing some pretty heavy metal these days and we just have two guitarists and no Bass player so I need a lot of low's!
Any recommendations? Should I be looking for higher watted speakers like 50's or 70's? Also, with my 8 ohm internal speakers is it best if I run an external cab with 16 or 8 ohms?

Thanks in advance!

how about a 4x10 marshall closed back loaded with Celestion G35L's?

Call Mills Acoustics and check them out. You will not regret it.

You guys mean the Tremoverb combo sits nicely on top of the 2x12 Rec cabinet? I just slide the wheels off?

Correct, it should also have rubber feet on the bottem so it will sit safely on top.

I'm looking to get some tight bass out of this cabinet. Will the V30's provide that with hi gain?

You will defintly get more bass out of a closed back cabinet then an open back. however if you want alot of bass I would suggest getting a 4x12 to sit under your tremo. However if you are playing live alot where you will be mic'ed alot i wouldnt worry about it as the sound engineer can add, but more then likley will remove access bass.

yep I play live with small to med size clubs. The 4x12 is a bit much as I already have a marshall 4x12 at the rehearsal space. But I wish I had the closed back 2x12 with the tremoverb combo. I'll be looking for a 2x12... how about the vertical cab? Is it worth it for the wheels and extra 15 lbs?

The vertical 2x12 shouldnt be heavier, basically the same dimentions with wheels and set vertical.

People either love the verticals or hate the verticals, they are slightly different then the normal oversized as they have a little less internal volume since the top is slanted. The slanting of the top does the following things, gives a tad bit more mid and removes a tad bit of the bass. However you can remedy this by buying some polyfil and putting it in the cabnet which tricks the speakers into thinking the cabinet is bigger (more internal volume).

So overall it is up to you, do you want to sit your tremoverb on top of the 2x12 or beside it.

great thanks for the info. Good to think about. I'll be looking locally for a 2x12 and something tells me the horizontal cabs are much easier to find.

thanks

Where you located? I do have one for sale but I am not shipping, if you are local to VA you could stop by.

NYC. A bit too far for a stopover...

What would you think about putting another speaker in my Tremoverb combo? So I'd have a V30 and say at G12t-75?

I would say just get a 2x12 and be happy.

my tremoverb combo has 2 V30s in it. i use it with a LOPO 2x12 cab with hellatone 60s. i guess its redundant being theyre all basically v 30s, but i do get a tight sound. think clutch meets metallica. the LOPO cab has a closed back, so that helps tightness too.

to the op. how do you like those tubes in your combo? i had them in my marshall dsl 50 and i wasnt digging them too much.

You could also check out Avatar cabs. I bought a 2x12 contemporary from them for my Ecstasy and it sounds great! If you want a big low end, check out Celestion G12K-100s. They're pretty sick.

This is exactly my thinking.. the G12K-100's have that great biting tight low end and are basically the same input sensitivity as V30's.
My combo is a little too honky with the V30's but I would miss that MID sound that cuts thru the mix. A 2x12 with with the 100's would be ideal for me. Wish Mesa would do a recto cab with 100's!
