I finally did it!! I started off the metal quest by buying a 91' Gibson SG and putting some 81/85 EMG's in them, which in my opinion is great for not just metal.. then I bought a Roadster Combo... what a beast. It took a little bit to get used to the different settings and even though I could get what I wanted with the cleans and rock n roll, I could never get the incredible metal tone I wanted.
After much deliberation, and much tweaking I went ahead and got the Maxon OD808 pedal. WOW. That changed how I approached the knobs of the amp. After listening to a lot of Killswitch Engage, and As Lay Dying to name a few, I couldn't understand how they got that thick meaty tone, but so clear. It all has to do with driving the MID's. After setting the overdrive on the pedal at 3, tone 12, and output 3 o'clock, cranking my mid's nearly full on the amp, and edging off the gain and bass I achieved metal bliss.
Seriously Amazing.
Sorry about the long-winded post, but I thought I'd share this with you guys.
