What did it cost you Az?

I paid $7000AUD for the MarkV head, a stiletto 4x12 cab, with Dimarzio super distortion and PAF Pro pickups thrown in and installed and my guitar set up.

The head retails for $5999 here so I'm happy with the price. It was bought with workers compensation money for having the end of my middle finger on my fret
hand chopped off in 2003 so the spend is justified.

And to think I nearly bought a Crate Blue voodoo! What a **** amp. When I heard about the MarkV I had a lengthy 20 second discussion with myself
and put down a deposit. :)

Can't wait to crank the V.

Good for you mate. Sorry to hear of your injury, but it sounds like you have devised a good coping strategy :D

I have a Mk IV combo which was my main gigging amp for years. Its still an impressive beastie.

Enjoy your Boogie in good health and give us a review when you finally get it fired up.

Cheers mate.

I have a strategy for you. In Australia you can claim musical instrument purchases on tax. I claim 20% depreciation per year
plus all gig tickets, cds, strings, picks, internet! (no ****) mobile phone, band t-shirts, black jeans, etc...

Go and see a good accountant because from the sounds of it your a student like me and probably don't earn over $40,000 a year yet. (this is the income threshold)

The only hurdle is you need a gig payment receipt or proof of some cd sales. If you're gigging it will be easy.

Go and do your tax - get cash - buy more gear (speaker box) with that cash - claim that gear next year.

The V head is costing me $5000 on paper. I can claim 20% ($1000) per year over 5 years. (in which time it is deemed worthless... )

That is amazing...I wonder if I could claim my head as a business expense...

i'm not really gigging but i will be roady-ing over the next few weeks so that counts?.. if i need to do a gig to get this tax thing going on (which i did know somewhat about) i will... i also have a fully loaded EBMM JP6 i just bought... and i work in a cd store where i spend all the rest of my money... i need an accountant me thinks...

To claim a tax deduction in Australia for musical expenses (eg, consumables such as strings, leads, and depreciation of capital expenses like amps and guitars) you have to be able to prove you are engaged in music professionally, rather than as a hobby. This means (among other things) having proof that you are making income from music (in my case, gigs, CD sales and APRA royalties). I have another day job (because its REALLY hard making a decent income from full time music in Oz) and I have an ABN for my musical pursuits.

You really should talk to an accountant.

Good luck!

thanks dude...
i'm the go to guy for a shredder or lead player at uni but i couldn't charge any of those kids, and my current band is a tech deth metal band that i don't want to really take any further than a recording project... so right now its looking like i'm a very stupid but lucky enthusiast... real shame though... maybe i should just do a few gigs... 20% of 5.5 grand is a lotta money to me...

I also play the metal of death...

Go and see an accountant for sure, but ask your muso mates if any of them know a good guy in your state. I use a guy in Adelaide at MTS. I didn't need an abn or any hard "proof" of my income from music. Just reciepts of what was spent and in some cases I just told him what I spent or made; for example $7 a week on rehearsal room hire, $300 from a gig.

The cool thing is that you can run your band as a money losing exercise and claim everything against the tax on your primary job. I am also a uni student so I can't claim as much as when I worked full time (because I'm paying less tax now and getting Austudy), but next year when I go back into the real world I should be paying more tax and be able to claim more on the mesa gear.

I still can't believe we can do this, but take advantage of it before K-Rudd and the Swan find this hole in their budget and close it up. Hopefully it's too small and they don't notice it or are liberal enough to allow it to continue. :)
