I had a 5:25 Express, but let it go because I didn't like the 10 inch speaker. Now I have a 2x12 cab.

So I'm looking at Mini Recs and wondering how it compares to the sounds I was getting from the Express....

The guy at the Mesa dealer in Omaha says the MR compeltely blows teh Express out a the water....but I'm reluctant to take the word of the guy selling the new ones!

Anybody tried both?

**Hmph** "blows it out of the water." Apples to oranges.

The Mini Rec is a small recto and the Express is much more of a Mark-ish flavour. If you want massively scooped metal / rock type tones and some mean crunch, the Mini Rec is the way to go. Try before you buy...

In my experience, I thought the Electra Dyne DESTROYED the Mini Rec, but that is just for my personal needs. In the future I'll think about picking up a mini used but I'm going to hold off for now!

Good point, probably not the most important sounds I was looking for. Although, the Mesa demo clips of the MR don't really seem to make that point, they make it seem like metal and hard crunch rock are just one little corner of what the MR will do.

Russo's in Omaha has several, a Mini Rec, Express 5:50, TA 15/30, Lonestar, Stiletto, Mark V, etc......so I am planning a little joy ride Saturday, me and my guitar!

Don't forget to add the Royal Atlantic to the mix. :) Enjoy your Saturday!

you can get almost any sound out of the mini, it will have the color of a recto but it could be used between jazz clean and death metal type-ish sound.
I think your always better to have an amp that can give you more that you need and run it half way!

I've had both and I think the Mini is a far better unit.
I can get way more variety of tone.
Its just a great amp in a small package.

Yeah, the Mini Rec blew me away when I took my guitar to Omaha, and I had it side by side with a 5:50 Express, among others. The only thing that would have been hard to choose is if the TA15 had an fx loop, that might have made me pause.

But the way they sit right now, I'm thinking the Mini Rec is definitely something I want to delve into. I was especially impressed with being able to get 4 great sounds - one sound for each mode - without using any pedals!
