You can control the output level on the POD by the output level, it will not overload your amp.

Yes you can use that power amp with a set of speakers. However if you are using guitar speakers there is a different setting on the POD you use. If you ever get to that point just PM me and I will explain to you.

You can get a used POD 2.0 for about $100 to $150 on ebay. There are many on ebay, just make sure to get version 2.0 or above.

Ex... http://cgi.ebay.com/Line-6-POD-v-2-0-Guitar-Multi-Effects-Amp-Modeler_W0QQitemZ170092108579QQcategoryZ41419QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

and there are many more there. Stay away from XT's and the version 1.0's. The PRO's are not bad either of the original.

Basically it models up to 32 different amps, with different speaker configurations and effects.

Great for home recording and just fiddling around.

Another consideration may also be this POD 2.0. Have never heard of it. Have no idea what it is about, but if it can reproduce all these tones relatively well for a hundred bucks it may just be worth it to have some fun with and see what it can do. I would not expect perfection, but who knows, maybe close??
I just happen to have an old rack mount Peavey PA amp(deca528) that I could use. Would just need a speaker cabinet(s).
Siggy14, would the voltage be ok to just use adapters to go into a home stereo?

If I would ever want to record some stuff it would seem the POD 2.0 would be easy enough, but with an amp would using a mic be best or do they have decent outputs on those for that?

The Behringer and Digitech genesis need to be mentioned if you are going to recommend amp modelers. The behringer Vamp2 is $99 from musiciansfriend brand new in box. It sounds ok and is good enough for practicing and recording. Personally, these things do not do it for me no matter how hard I try but they do sound pretty good if you are looking to get back into things. I really don't recommend going out and spending $2k on a tube amp just to get back into guitar.

The digitech genesis is more effect heavy with a bunch of things that you probably normally wouldn't buy but it's neat to use once a year.

Another thing to look at is the behringer vampire which sells for $250 shipped from musiciansfriend as well(this is a combo version of the vamp2). Line 6 makes a little practice combo called the spider which is supposed to be nice for practicing but not so great with a band. I played one but wasn't too impressed.

At this point you have many cost effective options so you can take your time to decide what you need. If you are going to start up with a band in the near future and need something to take to gigs or practices then a 30-50 watt tube combo would probably be a good choice (and Mesa certainly would fill the bill there) otherwise, i would say save your money until you need something like that.
