Hey guys.

I just acquired a Stereo Simul 295 (later version with the front controls) and the previous owner had been running all 6L6 power tubes, instead of EL34s on the 2 outer pairs. When I got it home and opened it up, I immediately swapped in some EL34s and it powers up fine and sounds killer.

I don't know how long it was run with the 6L6s, just wondering if this could have caused any damage to any of the other parts?? Everything looks fine inside with the exception of a bit of browning on the porcelain tube sockets (again on the outer pairs only)...

BTW this thing is a huge over-engineered tank! The insides are crazy looking, looks like a bomb with all the huge (caps??)

It shouldn't have damaged anything, but take a look at the plate resistors (white "sugar" type, directly soldered on the socket). If they look brownish they may be replaced.
So way beter with EL34 ? I agree !

Just getting interested in Mesa's power amps....what extra controls are on the front of the later units compared to the earlier unit of the 295?

Also, I like the concept of the voicing switches on the 2:90...but....I prefer EL34's to 6L6's because I'm more into blues/classic rock tones rather than shred/metal. So, do either the 2:95 or 2:90 allow for all the power tubes to be EL34's, and run at half power/50W?

My 295 has volume and prescence knobs on the front for each channel. I think the older 295s had volumes on the back, and just a prescence switch for each channel. There is a Simulclass/Class A switch on the back for each channel which allows you to select 95 watts ( Simulclass ) or 30 watts Class A (just the EL34s).

So far I have mostly used both channels in Class A for a lower volume situation. Haven't had the chance to really crank it yet...

I am slaving a Mark IIC+ through a TC G-system and using the 295 for stereo wet sides, and the IIc+ dry through its own cabinet.

I would ike to do a similar thing with my Mark III. What output do you use to send the IIC+ signal back to the g-system? Slave out? Direct out?

Yes, I'm using the slave out. I tried the effects send to see how that sounded, but for some reason plugging the G-System into the effects send affected the dry tone of the IIC+.
