8 ohm or 16 ohm?

What benefits or differences might be heard when running a 4x12 in stereo @ 8 ohms, as opposed to running the 4x12 in mono @ 16 ohms? (Single recto Solo 50 head)

I'm second-guessing myself on buying an Avatar 2x12, as opposed to just using my cabs I currently own...
Can I better spend my money in another area? (OD pedal/FX/etc.)

mesa heads have got only one output, so you must run your cab in mono i think (if this is what you're asking)... you could run a 4x12 in stereo if you had for example a 2 channel poweramp...
