Does the DR come stock with both 6L6s and EL34s? Also, if one decides to run the amp w/ EL34s, you can leave the 6L6 sockets empty, and vise versa, right?

Thanks,

It comes stock with 6L6s, and EL34s use the same sockets.

I am finding it hard to dial out the "boominess" from my 3 ch DR + Recto 4 x 12. Great for power chords but full chords are dominated by bassy boom even when bass EQ'd right out. It seems that trying EL34s might kill the boom. Hesitant to try KT66s as the amp not specifically designed for them it seems (& I'm a plug and play king of person)

Put EL34s in your Dual and or use the Maxxon OD808 or Ibanez TS9 to tighten up your sound. Doing either is a huge difference so do some experimenting to find the sound and tone you like. If you do both, you will have a completely different sounding Dual in front of you.

cheers

I used a set of JJ E34Ls in my Dual for going on 3 years biased at 90% dissipation, and didn't have the first problem with them. I've had more blown 6L6s than I have EL34s.
I am going to order a set of tubes. As well as a new set of 6L6s, I will get a set of EL34s for fun. What does 'biased at 90% dissipation" mean? I thought I could just whack in EL34s and flick the switch on the back.

Just tried out SED EL34s. Yes, I liked it. Did what I thought. More of that Marshallesque chainsaw. Not better than the 6L6 death thump, just different. I also bought a bunch of different 12AX7s and some EH rectifier tubes.

First up I had the SED EL34s with all stock Mesa 12AX7s and rectifiers. Sounded great.

Then I removed all the stock Mesa 12AX7s and rectifiers and put in a mix of EH, Tungsol, Sovtek & JJ tubes. Didn't sound as good. Too much fizz. I will experiment further. The change the EL34s made on their own was very nice though.

My thoughts:
EL-34 ----> Cab with G12m 25 / G12H 30 (Green Beret / Reaper 30 etc)
6L6 ------> Cab with c90 / v30.

Personal preference, etc. I will say EL-34s always convince me to <3 my dual and never to part with it. (etc etc)

I like the 6l6 thump as well but after using EL34's for a while and then swithing back to a 6l6 it sounds kind of brittle and scooped. It helps having a Simul-class amp and being able to run both at the same time. 8)

What positions did you put the 12AX7 tubes in? I have mesa pre-amp tubes and they seem very fizzy and compressed, not very natural sounding...They dont handel gain well either. They are the russian 2 kind, which are supposed to be EH
