Hello everyone, I'm pretty new here.

Yesterday I ordered myself some new tubes to replace the old preamps and power tubes on my Roadster.

What I purchased is as follows:
Preamps:
1-Tung Sol 12AX7 re-issue
1-Sovtek LPS
2-JJ ECC83S
2-Electro-Harmonix 12AX7

Power tubes:
Quad Tung-Sol 6550's!!!

I called mesa directly yesterday to ask about if I could add KT88 or 6550 tubes in my amp, and while the guy said no to the KT88 (mainly because it's not been tested enough), the guy did say that 6550 should be fine. I was pleasantly surprised and reassured from other mesa owners that they've put in KT88 in there mesa amps and that the 6550 will be fine.

What do you guys think? I ordered the tubes from http://www.dougstubes.com but the guy said that the current will be too high for the amp but I have other people who say differently that the current isn't high enough to kill my amp.

I'm thinking I'd go with the guy's recommendation from the place that builds the amp.

Hmmm...I don't know about this. I would call Boogie again and ask to speak to someone who knows for sure... I don't think there'd be enough bias voltage present as I presume you'd also have to switch to run it as EL34s (the pin configurations of EL-34s and 6550s match, 6L6's are different). When doing this EL34 to 6550 changeover on a Marshall for example, the bias always needs to be set and a resistor changed to get it in usable range. The Boogie I'm sure would need similar work.

Also, in today's tube production world, KT88's and 6550's are really one in the same.

Update:

I added the 6550's in EL34 mode and it ran BEAUTIFULLY!

Sounds really great too!
