My mark III loaded purple stripe is at mesa right now for general service and R2 mod. Would the OVERALL benefit be worth the extra $200-250 for the 3+ mod? The amp has the 100 transformer and not the 105. Would there be a huge difference than leaving it as a purple? Opinions appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

Depends on what you are looking for . A lot of bedroom players like the 3+ mod because it smooths out the treble response. Gigging players can benefit from the stock treble response because it cuts well and it also records very well. I had two blue stripe Mark 3 heads and one had the 3+ mod and I prefer stock personally.

IMO, the last thing my Mk III needs is more treble...and I have a green stripe (which includes all mods, doesn't it?). That's, of course, totally subjective, but the earlier Mk III's I played all had other factors dialing back the treble - at least 1 RFT preamp tube, V30 speakers, etc. - which I haven't done with my green stripe yet (actually, RFT and Tungsols are on their way in as I type). The upper mids still cut thru the mix without any prob in my application.

Nope. It can still use the C30 mod. The last greenie that I had was outfitted with the C30 mod as well as NOS pre and power tubes with a Pentode/Triode switch like the Mark IV. Awesome amp, but it still did not have the "feel" of the C+, so it found another home.

pardon the noob Q, but can you explain the C30 mod? more along the lines of what improvements/changes in tone does it make?

c30 mod is to increase the cap [ c30 ] from 500pf to 1,000 pf
which helps smooth out the lead circuit [ less treble ]
apprently some mkIII's don't even have it

someone correct me if i'm wrong

it would be helpfull to have a mkIII mod sticky
