$1800 to spend: what would you get? TVerb,Dual,Roadster,King
I have about $1800 to spend...
(may also get a MB 2x12 cab)
I am in a Foo Fighters Tribute (but also play 80's Hard Rock/Metal )
What would be your Amp and Why...
I am looking at:

Tremoverb

Dual Reborn

Roadster

Road King ( also is there a difference between series 1 and 2?)

The reason I ask is that I need a Clean (jangley) some kind of mid marshall territory (maybe using a pedal)...and the RECTO sound...I am finding the Dual Recto can get alot of tones if time is spent understanding it...It also seems the Cab and speakers are very important...

Thanks

I had a chance to get a Road King but I went for Roadster. I added a bias pot mod and I have been experimenting with different tubes. I am very happy with it.

Thanks

1) Roadster.

2) Dual Recto Reborn.

I think you'll find the Roadster is the best option for what you need. Apparently you put a Tung Sol in v1 to open it up!

My only concern was the comments of it being "dark" or too dark?

My vote would be for a Dual Rec Reborn. Haven't tried the tungsol as per YellowJacket's suggestion, but yeah, I've found the Roadster to be a bit too dark and boomy for my tastes. The new Duals just provide a more usable palate of sounds for me. It will nail those foo fighters tones and the pushed or raw mode will lend itself very nicely to in between sounds.

how many channels do you think you need? I bought a roadster because I am all over the map with gain settings, 4 channels comes in handy when you go from 3 days grace, to bob marley, to annie defranco to SRV to pink ... you get the point right?

If you use lots of effects you'll definitely wanna go with some sort of midi switching setup.

Minimum config:
A clean (pushed) rollback volume to clean it up...
Hit clean with OD pedal if needed...
an a modern channel.

I have a Roadster and I do not think it sounds dark... though I use EL34s and tend to use a brighter tone overall; could be the guitars. The amp would cover all the tones of the Foo's

I agree that with EL34's the amp doesn't sound dark, but with the 6L6's that it ships with there is a blanket over the amp sound. So yeah, Roadster with EL34's for the win.

I was able to keep the 6L6's and change the V1 preamp tube with a tungsol on some sound advice on this site. It made all of the difference. I vote for Roadster. I personally do not think that any other amp out there can get you the variety of tones for a live show.

I totally agree....and definitely use a tungsol in V1. I use a bbe in my rack, along with other things, and I continuously get compliments on my sound with my Roadster. It's probably my favorite amp in my arsenal!!! Get a ts-9 in front, an eq in the loop if needed, and a v30 loaded cab. You can't go wrong with the Roadster. I think it's Mesa's best hidden secret weapon...that more and more are discovering and starting to use!

I also have a Tung Sol in V1! One of the best changes you can make for this amp.

Nothing better than use what they used for a long time (of course there's more involved like guitars, pickups, pedal/effects, sound tech, etc), so you can get a starting point to go from:
http://www.performing-musician.com/pm/aug09/articles/techthat.htm

Nowadays They use this:
http://www.google.pt/imgres?q=dave+grohl+guitar+rig+2012&um=1&hl=pt-PT&sa=N&biw=1024&bih=564&tbm=isch&tbnid=mJ5Mubr2OyRU9M:&imgrefurl=http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/backstage/215362-dave-grohl-beers-fan-middle-his-show-2.html&docid=dBNs2fRM9vAbdM&imgurl=http://i56.tinypic.com/5vt55j.jpg&w=640&h=480&ei=OW6KUJTYN8WzhAeN1IHoDA&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=391&sig=113136281945458610463&page=1&tbnh=133&tbnw=162&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:0,i:91&tx=80&ty=66

For more versatility the Road King woulb be better (and expensive also) but maybe you can reduce the expenses by acquiring a 2X12" instead a 4X12" cab.

Quoting Grohl's guitar tech: "I like the Mesa Boogie Road Kings because 1) they sound good, and 2) they’re bullet-proof. We’ve dropped our racks off the loading docks, and when you fire them up to see if they work, they actually sound better!"
lol Sorry guys, I just had to put this here!

My vote is for a used RK I, they are great amps, can be had pretty cheap, between $1300 and $1500 and is what the Foo's were using live for the longest time. They are not dark, more like a TVerb in distortion and pushed mode with a pedal gives you perfect plexi tone.

Is the only real difference between the roadster and Road king ..the progressive linkage? the ability to use the 34's and 6l6's instead of making a choice on the roadster?

And cab selection. You can select between one of two cab outputs with the Roadking. So, a close back 4 x 12 for crunch and some sort of open back with different speakers for clean.

I know the original RK was alot brighter with more upper mid's then a normal rec, but I have never played a RKII
