Unboxing Issue: Scratched Transformer on New JP-2C

What you're looking at is varnish that they dip the transformers in after they're assembled. It is not scratched, this is completely normal and nothing to be concerned about

REISSUE Rumor: Mark IIC+ and 2ch Recto

I just watched Paul's part 2 video and read some comments, this is unsettling. A high gain amp builder will know this sound quite well, hopefully Boogie is working to rectify and it can be resolved with lead dress

REISSUE Rumor: Mark IIC+ and 2ch Recto

    Boogie's IIC+ schematic shows 6CA7 or EL34 use in V8 / V9 sockets, highlighted below:

Mesa Boogie Transformers: Questions and History

Advanced Photonix makes an NSL-37V5C1 which is a good substitute for the VTL5C1 in the stock IIC+ circuit. I tested in terms of forward voltage, on resistance, and state transition time. It does have a CdS cell like the original Vactecs so it does not meet RoHS. The Advanced Photonix NSL-32SR2...

Mesa Boogie Transformers: Questions and History

I found an acceptable replacement but the most recent quote was $11.50 ea for the min quantity of 1,000. I’ll be using relays once my supply of NOS is gone

Mark III HRG Blue Stripe -> DRG No Stripe Conversion

I did not end up converting blue to black, there are other changes required. I think it was around 505

Vintage Mark-style PCB and chassis kit

Thank you for saying such nice things @Less02! I agree on the reissue, I can't imagine Boogie would ever go back to the construction method of the old Marks as it's so time intensive.

Vintage Mark-style PCB and chassis kit

I know, it's super exciting! If I'd have known this way back when I wouldn't have dumped all this time and money into the project but it was still fun. I wonder which version it will be, DRG short head? I hadn't heard it will be a limited run, seems like a lot of work to sell only a few but I...

Vintage Mark-style PCB and chassis kit

If you're asking me, nothing to report as I haven't been able to connect with my CNC guy yet. I need to have him cut another box top for me (something got messed up when we programmed the CNC so thank goodness I measured before glue up) and we need to see if we can get a good faceplate solution...

    Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Roadster

I don't have a schematic but I'd be absolutely shocked if it is cathode biased. First thing I would do is set your output / solo / send / master pots to noon, bypass your loop in the back, and take out the rectifier tubes and change all channels to the diode / 100W and recheck. If it still...

    Ciao Mk2b…

Thank you for the kind words! Can't wait to hear how it comes out :) Frustrating to hear about this misrepresentation, it seems dishonest people aren't uncommon in the used gear market. I hope the C+ circuit is as good of a fit for you as it is for me!

    Ciao Mk2b…

Glad you're making the leap and I appreciate the feedback on the board errors!

Vintage Mark-style PCB and chassis kit

Been taking a bit of a break on this project, mostly for personal reasons but also waiting to see what happens with the Boogie C+ reissue. Today I cleaned up the pieces from the CNC and test fit came out great

New JP live rig for 2024

You beat me to it! I like that he reincorporated the 2290 (and 2290P) and the mixer back into the rig. I read an interview from years ago where Petrucci said he will probably always have a 2290 in the rig, I was wondering if it would ever resurface. I hope Maddi tells us how it’s configured at...

Do Tubes Make that much of a Difference

They certainly do publish curves and have for quite some time. Here is an example from a current production JJ: Although these are not frequency response curves, which I can't say I've seen for a discrete electronic device, they depict the inherent nonlinearity which indicates how the tube...

    Multiple amps / cabs Switch

I use the ACS 4x4 FX at home, it's expensive but works well. I did run into some MIDI implementation issues but it has been a while so I don't remember specifics, I think it was related to CC messages. If this is important to you I would plan out your application and verify MIDI functionality...

Randall Smith and Mesa Boogie Parting Ways??

It seemed like he was still their primary designer, there was a relatively recent interview (post Mark VII release) with Doug West where he said there were a bunch of amps in Randy's queue and that Randy was still a "mad man". I don't think Randy has been physically present at Ross St but...

Randall Smith and Mesa Boogie Parting Ways??

I've only seen second hand info at this point so it's tough to say what (if anything) went down. If Randy is gone and it was planned you'd think there would have been a corporate announcement from Gibson on succession plan. If they parted on bad terms or could lead to potential legal issues you...

    Mesa MKIIB -RP-9C

What do you mean by it's not switching right? The behavior you described sounds appropriate. Master 1 is active in both rhythm and lead modes, Lead Master should only be active in the lead mode.

Vintage Mark-style PCB and chassis kit

Thank you for the insight! I have a friend with a CNC who cut the plywood for the cab, he said he will help with the faceplates. I bought some acrylic and aluminum sheets from a local supplier to test, will hopefully have something to show within the next couple weeks
