Way to get a more modern heavier metal sound?

I don't think of open-back combos as the ultimate metal solution. I'm sure there are open-back combos that do metal, but closed-back 4x12s have been the go-to cabs for metal for a long time. I have the V head; I've played it thru a 2x12 vertical Boogie, a 3/4 back 1x12 Boogie and a 4x12 Engl...

    Mark V Head or Combo?

Get the head and a 1x12 (or 2x12) cab. An open back cab (since you already have closed-back 4x12) would give you more versatility, and give sounds similar to the combo. The mesa 3/4 back 1x12 sounds really nice with the Mark V cleans.

Upgraded my MKV - tan grille

LOL! Hmm... then you probably won't like my amp stand for my Mark...

Upgraded my MKV - tan grille

Ouch! $170 is a lot of cash for a grille! I wonder if it costs more since the MKIIC+ isn't in production anymore?

Upgraded my MKV - tan grille

How hard is it to change the grill? Is it just a matter of unscrewing the old one and putting the new one on, or does the piping present challenges? Any hints about the cost?

I am discovering that there is some magic in Mark I mode

Mark I + strat (single-coil pups) = :-) To my ears, the Mark I setting is super thick nad best suited for single coil pups or slightly wimpier, HBs. I'd say the same about the actual Mark I reissue.

Recto Recording Pre thru Mark V?

Anyone tried this? I have a Mark V, and a Roadster. The only thing I use the Roadster for now is the high gain Recto sound. I've read threads about Mark V settings for recto sound, and while pretty good, it doesn't quite get there for my personal taste. I wouldn't mind selling the Roadster and...

Intelligent Pitch Shifter Recommendations for the Mark V

At the moment, I'm only doing studio work. I wouldn't be afraid to use it live, but of course, I'd have to know exactly what preset to use on what song and have it appropriately tweaked ahead of time.... it's not like a chorus or flanger. :-)

Intelligent Pitch Shifter Recommendations for the Mark V

I'm enjoying the PitchFactor. A few notes... It works much better thru the fx loop. The factory presets are not so good. Most of them have delay on the harmonies; just turning the delay all the way down makes them much more usable. You have to read the manual. A lot of the buttons and knobs...

Continually impressed, even after a month.

A strat through the Mark I mode is awesome... I prefer it to my Mark I RI.

You aren't giving the Extreme mode it's fair chance

To my ears, extreme sounds good thru my 4x12 (Engl w/ V30s) but not so good thru my Boogie Recto 2x12 vertical. I think the cab has a large effect on the sound turning mushy.

    EQ Sliders Vs. Preset Knobs

The presets used with the Preset Depth controls seem to work pretty well for me. I have the depth set pretty low on for Channel 1 EQ. I suppose not using the presets would be necessary if you wanted the EQ to add more mids, but it seems easy enough to get mids from the simple treble, mid, bass...

    First impressions...

    P. S. I don't get any popping when changing channels to different wattage settings. I do, however, get a pop when I change from 10 watt to 45 or 90 watts (while staying on the same channel). No big deal for me.

    First impressions...

Having never played thru a Mark IV, the main difference I notice is that the knobs on the V are different. :-)

    First impressions...

I picked up the Mark V head Friday at a local music store. Channel 1... I have a Mark I reissue, and I think they pretty much nailed it. I think I actually prefer the Mark V over the Mark I. The EQ is a very nice addition as well. For my ears, to use the preset EQ the Preset Depth needs to be...

    Open Back Cabinet with Roadster?

I love my Roadster with my 3/4 back 1x12 Mesa cab (w/C90). I also have an ENGL Vintage 4x12 with V30s. Despite a huge difference in cost, I often like the little 1x12 better. It has a more "open" sound which works very well for a lot of styles (not too good for a tight bottom though). The 3/4...

Anyone have a photo of a NEW Dual Rec w/black diamond plate?

I've got an old DR with a black diamond plate and chrome chassis, but it has creme tolex... probably going up on eBay soon.

dual rec sweet spot too loud

I got a hot plate. While I find it useful, it's still not enough (the more you attenuate, the more tone you lose). I use a 2x12 instead of a 4x12; if I had one readily available, I'd try a 1x12. Boogie needs to make a 20-watt DR. :-) ...maybe not the best for cleans, but who buys a DR for the...

How should use my effects? In the loop or not?

Modulation effects will tend to get muddy if they go thru the pre, so in most cases you'd want them in the loop. A delay or verb before the preamp will have an unnatural decay; the overdriven preamp will boost the volume and thin the tone where the desired effect is usually a gradual fade-out...

Getting good cleans from a 2 channel Dual Rec...

What cabinet are you going thru? I prefer cleans thru an open back cabinent. Though I often hear people talk about how bad the sounds are, I like the sounds of the cleans I get out of my old DR using a PRS (strat doesn't sound quite as good thru the amp IMO). I sometimes wonder if they're...
