Is The Mark V 90w Right For Me?

I use 2 (1x12) cabinets in my band. I always use 45 watts. It sounds warmer to me. I almost always use single coil pickups and the 90 watt mode is a little bit too bright to my ears. My amp is always mic'd so I don't need to project volume from the stage.

Which power setting do you use most?

Maybe if I used a 4x12 cabinet I might want to use 90 watts. I also find 45 watts to be warmer sounding and I use it almost exclusively. I use 2 1x12 closed cabinets with a port.

first gig with Mark V - video

    Nice! Sounded great!

    thank you Boogie Board!

 Thanks for the great anecdote! Many times I run a Kemper (due to small setup area and/or volume) and like it a lot, but I can not give up my Mark V. When the stage setup is big enough (when there actually IS a stage of some sort), I ALWAYS use the Mark V. It's the most versatile amp...

    mesa 6l6 tube life?

Might it be a dirty tube socket or tube pin(s)? My Rivera Fandango failed to work at a gig. The light came on....no sound. I took V1 out when I got home and cleaned the socket with DeOxit...waited for it to dry and put the tube back in. It's worked fine ever since.

Start small and grow into it

Congrats on the new addition. :) Are you sure you want to sell the Marshall? I enjoy going back and forth for the different tones.

EL34 - Does this homogenize the sound of Ch.2 and Ch.3?

Well, I'm going to eat my words. I switched back to 6L6s.  I was missing the big, open tone in Ch. 2 and 3 and also the sparkle in Ch. 1. I've learned to dial in the highs so they're not overbearing (e.g. Ch. 1 treble around 9 o'clock and presence around 9 or 10 o'clock, mid...

    Does anyone use Extreme?

I never use Extreme and could live on the Crunch mode if I had to. I have noticed I can use Edge and MKI mode now that I have EL34s in the amp. Before, Edge was too brittle and MKI was too muddy.

    Looking to go Wireless....maybe...

I have a G50 and love it with no perceivable coloration to the tone. I use Energizer rechargables and they last for a 5 hour gig (with breaks) with plenty to last afterwards. However, I always give them a full charge before we start. (Within an hour before we go on.)

EL34 - Does this homogenize the sound of Ch.2 and Ch.3?

That is correct...as heavy as I go is Bon Jovi and AC/DC  Being able to use single coil pickups without the ice pick highs is very important.

EL34 - Does this homogenize the sound of Ch.2 and Ch.3?

Thanks, guys, for the comments. I will have to continue experimenting with IIC+ and IV to start along with Ch. 2.

EL34 - Does this homogenize the sound of Ch.2 and Ch.3?

Being tired of the ice pick highs with stock 6L6s, I installed EL34s and was thrilled that I can actually use the treble and presence controls along with using single coil guitars with the Mark V now. However, it seems that Ch.2 and Ch.3 pretty much sound the same regardless of toggle switch...

don't use the footswitch and ext control jacks together

:( Sorry it happened to your amp. Thank you for the heads up.

Any non-metal players here (jazz, blues, R&B, funk, soul)?

My idea of metal is UFO so I don't listen to/play anything noisier than that. (No "BROOTZ") I do the totally clean thing along with music like Tom Petty, Steely Dan, Bon Jovi, Al Green etc. in my band. My Mark V does all of it well and my band thinks it's the best tone I've every gotten.

    My Custom Mark V:25.

That entire setup is sharp looking....especially that guitar.

    My experience with EL34s

I'm using Mesa branded EL34s direct from them. Here's a quick, initial review of the EL34s. I did make sure to flip the bias switch. Due to others living in the house who just came out to the main room where I set up the gear, I couldn't get a decent volume without bothering them so I did about...

Here's what Fractal is doing to our music

A couple of hours on an Ultra when I was helping a friend out with his. None on the new one. That's not the point. I'm asking about clips/videos to show what the AXE can do. If you can post any clips that equal a warm, over driven tone and or classic rock tone (Robben Ford or ZZ Top), please do...

Here's what Fractal is doing to our music

Every time I hear the AXE it sounds compressed and artificial. The times I don't use my Mark V (for convenience and/or size of personal setup room I am allotted), I use my Kemper Profiler which sounds more natural and realistic **IMO**. (Let's not turn this into an AXE vs. Kemper thing.) Now...

Please let us know your thoughts on EL34 vs 6L6. :)

Which pedals work well with the V? Which don't?

Wow. Great recommendation. I just saw a couple demos and it's very impressive. Will definitely have to pick one up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5D2XsEIDrYU
