Definitely closer to tweed, and more so when overdriven if you're using speakers more consistent with tweeds. With the right speaker, you can get sounds closer to that of the 18 watt marshalls, but typically with a lot thicker mid range. But it still sounds like the Blue Angel and nothing else...

I have to disagree. It may be dramatic in some amps (I have not heard any) but those amps I used to make the clips are full tilt, and the differences are very slight even using the original uncompressed files and listening through my studio monitors (only Mackies, but they're accurate enough)...

I find this statement to be ridiculous. There are plenty of musicians (and I use the term loosely) who can't tell the difference between tubes and modelers, and plenty who don't even care.

How do you not get that if I change the channel strip (GTMBV) tone controls and play then change the 6L6s to EL34s and play, the amp will sound the same, thus proving that there isn't a significant contribution made by the tubes?

My Blue Angel says "PURE CLASS A POWER" on the front, and it's still not class "A." I don't know myself whether the Mark IV is really operating class A or getting 50 watts in that mode, or both, but it wouldn't be the first time something was, um, mislabeled. More at...
