Mark III sounds dramatically better after "warming up"

My amp runs off a furman voltage regulator these days, so my amp always sees 120v no matter what! It's nice to have confirmation of my observations. I guess my ears still have some life in them.

Mark III sounds dramatically better after "warming up"

Maybe you could play for a while to heat up the components and then bias the amp? I'm seriously considering getting an adjustable bias pot installed in my mark IIIs! Or at least getting a probe to test out my current tubes.

Do Mark IIIs vary significantly amp to amp?

I now have a red stripe in addition to my black/green stripe. Well, they do sound noticeably different. The red is spongier in feel and the R2 and leach channels are definitely voiced differently [hotter]. My black green/stripe has the 105 transformer from the IIC+ era but is wired in pentode...

Where can I find a NOS RFT 12AX7 tube?

RFT 12ax7s can be bought from many of the NOS tube dealers. IMO it is a dark tube, and I only like it in v3 of my mark III. It is too dark and lacks detail for v1 and the PI. also, another tube to check out is the mullard cv4204 12at7. I really like it in the mark III. At least to my ears, it...

Mark III sounds dramatically better after "warming up"

So I turn on my mark III, let the tubes heat up for about 30 seconds, and start playing in R2. Sounds stiff, tight, and harsh. I then leave the amp on standby for about a half an hour and come back and start playing. Sounds WAAAAAY better. So what's the deal? I have been noticing this...

Mark III adjustable bias mod short head

Has anybody here done this mod? Can you post pics? Did it improve your tone? I have a short head and am wondering if there is any spot to put the bias pot on the outside so I don't have to remove the chassis every time I want to change tubes. Any relevant links/literature for my tech would be...

Do Mark IIIs vary significantly amp to amp?

Final thing...listened to a bunch of youtube videos of different stripes. The red stripe is where it's at for this sound.

Do Mark IIIs vary significantly amp to amp?

I've got an ibanez as103 semi-hollow w/ seth lover pickups. Definitely close enough to trey's axe. Also, I am using two TS-9 silver mods into an analog man comprosser...so that's on par as well. I have played with the settings to no end. One thing to note is that Trey only uses the GEQ when in...

Do Mark IIIs vary significantly amp to amp?

I have a loaded simul class Mark III from 1985. I bought it on ebay advertised as a green stripe, but it's really a black stripe with the 105 transformer that was "upgraded" in 2006 to a Green stripe at mesa boogie. I think this means that the power was changed from pentode to triode... but I'm...

    FS: Mesa Mark IVb

I have an early Mesa rackmount mark IVb in excellent condition. It was tuned up by Mike B. at Mesa/Boogie a few years ago [cap job, general maintenance, etc]. Anybody who has gone through the process of sending this beast of an amp to mesa/boogie knows that this adds significant value to the amp...

    Mark IV w/ 6v6s versus lone star w/ 6v6s

Oh for sure. And your DRRI is stock, right? I'm sure some NOS tubes and a speaker upgrade could add even more tone if one wanted to go that route. The thing is that my favorite DR tones come from a BF DR that was modded quite a bit, so it's hard to say. What I meant in my last post is that I...

    Mark IV w/ 6v6s versus lone star w/ 6v6s

I've read differing opinions on the DRRI, and honestly you might be in the minority. I need to try one out for myself, but my local gear shop selection stinks. Ever tried a lonestar? I hear the cleans are the same as the FAT mode on the mark V, and I remember that part of the mark V bringing a...

Need help buying NOS power tubes!

So there is no way to do a bias mod that includes a separate pot for inner and outer tubes?

Need help buying NOS power tubes!

Rather than only measure one tube, do you take measurements on both tube types and then adjust the bias to where both are in a good range? As I said, I'm learning about this stuff so maybe it's not possible to measure two tubes at once?

Need help buying NOS power tubes!

Very good advice. I will definitely look into getting the bias mod. Does the new bias pot affect both the inner and outer sockets or do you need a pot for each set of tubes? I'm no amp tech at all, but couldn't having only one pot cause issues if you are running 6L6s and eL34s in simulclass...

    Mark IV w/ 6v6s versus lone star w/ 6v6s

I've got Tung Sol 6V6 reissues in my mark IV right now using the recommended settings. It's a different tone for sure, although I suck at putting tone into words. Do a search and you will find people who love 6V6s in the mark IV. I'm just wondering if the lonestar will be even better for my...

Need help buying NOS power tubes!

Why no 6V6s in the mark IV? There are lots of positive reviews on this forum for mark IVs w/6V6s. Mesa states that it's ok as long as you flip tweed power, simul class, and connect an 8 ohm cab into the 4 ohm jack. I started another thread asking if a lonestar might be a better choice for the...

    Mark IV w/ 6v6s versus lone star w/ 6v6s

Hey there... I have a mark IV and am attempting to recreate a fender deluxe tone by using 6v6s. Specifically, I am trying to nail Trey Anastasio's tone that he achieved through a modded BF deluxe reverb with a mid boost amongst other mods. The GEQ on the mark IV seems to be helpful for getting...
