This is not a problem with the amp. The Mark V is not like most amps where you can set everything on 5 and go. The more gain you apply the less you can use eq. The manual says it better. I usually start by turning all the eq to zero and than dial up bass first than mid etc. It took me...

I tested all the tubes in my mv combo and most of the 12AX7s were on the weaker side. I swapped them out promptly and the sound is much better. Although I am now running EL34's, the factory 6L6's where nicely matched so no complaints on the power tubes.

My setup is very similar. Using delay and eq in the loop. Running EL34's. I tried NOS Siemans but found Mullard re-issues to be very nice. Also, swapped a bunch of 12AX7s and came up with a very warm sound that sings forever. Cleans have super punch.

I have a Custom 24 10 top 20th. I prefer the humbucker sound on the Mark V crunch and lead channels. Mostly run the eq in a V pattern. As you turn gain up than turn down high, mid, and lows (channel eq). I have found putting another EQ in the loop really helps with bring up the bottom end...

I have tried 2 different sets of EL34's. The hotter EL's sounded better. There is less high's but in a good way. So far, I prefer the El34's to the 6L6's that shipped with the Mark V. The clean channel with 6L6's rival the EL34's but channel 2 and 3 are much nicer with EL's, IMO.
