    Mesa 5:50 Express

Guitarist magazine in the UK just published a comprehensive review of both the 5:50 and 5:25, giving the 5:50 one of the elusive gold seals of approval. The disc that ships with the mag has sound samples.

    Lonestar Special Effects Loop mod

Thanks Ricardo - I've found a guy here in the UK who does this with a remote switcher so you don't need lots of cables going back and forth between you and the amp www.monkeyfx.co.uk - he calls it the "ottershocker" - so I can switch any number of effects in and out of the loop individually +...

    Lonestar Special Effects Loop mod

I love the pure clean tone of my LSS with nothing in the loop, but also the overdrive tone with a compressor in the loop (where it isn't supposed to go, but works great). For recording this is not an issue, but for live I'd like to be able to hard bypass just the effects in the loop (i.e. the...

    LS Special Newbee

That said, putting a compressor in the LSS loop works wonders for the overdrive sound - and usually you are "supposed" to put compressors before the amp's input instead. Check the first couple of tracks here for how it sounds: www.myspace.com/fudjmusic You should also check the tubes forum...

    Which Delay?

If you can find one, the Yamaha Magicstomp II has the best delays I've ever heard - up to 8 of them in series or parallel to two amps panned as you like it. They are based on those in the UD Stomp, but with more processing grunt. And they're cheap as chips.

    Roadster cleans...

Slightly counterintuitively, try turning your effect send level control up a bit so you can turn the level of anything in the loop down a bit. You may unintentionally be adding gain into the system.

Lonestar Special or 25:5 Express for more British El84 tones

Have a listen to the overdrive sound in this link to get an idea of some of the tones from a LSS. http://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?t=9599

Express combos - welcome to rip-off Britain once again...

Its not just Mesa - most music gear here is double the price. The problem with Mesas from the US is that you need to lug a transformer around as well. Amps are the only things I buy here - everything else is cheaper to import from the US (even European brands most of the time).

Trouble getting a good lead sound with the LSS

I'm using a basic pod compressor, which expectations aside on Line6 gear works great. There is a thread with the overdrive tone which I'm getting. I'll bump it back up so you can check it out.

Trouble getting a good lead sound with the LSS

Changing the power tubes makes a massive difference to the overdrive tone, and the preamp tubes improve it even more. NOS sound better than JJs, but cost more too. The Mesas are very harsh in comparison. Do a search in the tubes forum section, where there is a full discussion of the different...

    What's the best EL84 Mesa, & why????

Lonestar Special - best amp I've ever played through, although you need to be a tweaker to get the best from it.

Trouble getting a good lead sound with the LSS

Actually that specific track was done with the output volume around 1 o'clock (and I don't play stadiums, so it does for me :D ), but good tubes do clean things up remarkably compared to the stock Mesas. As delivered channel 2 wasn't that great for me with overdrive.

Trouble getting a good lead sound with the LSS

The tone in this link is done with humbuckers and the amp, but no overdrive pedal: http://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?t=9599 But you can't get there with standard Mesa tubes. Check the tube forum if it is anything like the direction you are thinking.

    Lonestar 8 or 4 ohms~difference in tone?

In my opinion: 4 ohms = more sparkly 8 ohms = more smooth (particularly for overdrive) 8 ohms seems to be slightly more versatile if you need to use just one setting live. But again I've got a special, so the same may not apply for the classic.
