So you don't like my cosmetic mod.

    Customizing our amps?

I went from this: To this:

    Speaker Load Substitution

You're welcome and yes, for other tube amps with matching OT taps, the power will remain the same as long as the speaker impedance is matched to the OT's tap. Power tubes have a pretty high nominal output impedance on the order of 3-5 kOhms, so no matter what, you'd need an output transformer...

    Speaker Load Substitution

Mesa's amps are rated for the same power into both 4 and 8 Ohm loads because the output transformer has multiple taps designed to make the load look the same to the tubes. The power equation doesn't apply to tube or SS amps in the way you're thinking. SS amps do increase the output power per...

    Tube Help/Questions

Mesa's standard STR-430 6L6 is actually a Russian Sovtek IIRC. You can use any 6L6 you want as long as it falls within the Mesa bias range. For example, I have Ruby 6L6GCMSTRs in mine from www.dougstubes.com that are matched to Mesa's bias.

F-100 CLIPS: AiC and Queen (SM-57 left, e609 silver right)

I like the SM-57's tone without much fuss over the position. To me, the e609 is a lot more sensitive to position in that moving it around changes the character more. Still, for clean work, the extra presence on the e609 would be welcome.

F-100 CLIPS: AiC and Queen (SM-57 left, e609 silver right)

Thanks! Which mic sound did you like better?

F-100 CLIPS: AiC and Queen (SM-57 left, e609 silver right)

Here are two clips I recorded Saturday morning with my newly purchased SM-57 and e609 mics. The SM-57 is fully left and the e609 is fully right for both so you can hear the difference and combined tones. What the Hell Does hal9000 Have? hal9000 Will Rock You! Here is the setting I used: On...

Can Someone Explain Rectifiers for me?

A rectifier is an electrical component used to limit current to a single direction in a wire. They can be tube or SS. In tube amps, the rectifiers are used to flip the negative half-cycle of the incoming AC wave so that creating DC from AC is easier. So, if you imagine a regular sine wave...

    Express 5:50 vs. F-50 Comparisson

They've already shipped and a few people have them at home already.

    Express 5:50 vs. F-50 Comparisson

That's good to know. Could you compare and contrast the clean and overdrive channels of the 5:50 with the F-50?

    Express 5:50 vs. F-50 Comparisson

IMO, none of the updates are worth $100 if the tone isn't there.

    LSS vs Express...

No, I didn't get Randall Smith's seal of approval on this one, but I've used it extensively with great results. It's basically the same as putting a line level volume pedal in the loop, or employing the overall master post loop like on my Tremoverb and the rest of the Recto series. You can't...

    LSS vs Express...

Give this a try with your F-50 to be able to get the master up higher, but reduce the overall level with more control:

Express Series: Are the Tube Sockets mounted to the PCB?

Modern Mesas have preamp tubes mounted to a rugged PCB and the power tube sockets mounted to the chassis. The Express should follow the same formula.

I test drove the new Express 5/25 !!!!!!

Interestingly enough, the F-30 is actually rated for 22 W, so if the Express 5:25 is really 25 W and the 10" speaker has the same 100 db SPL 1 W / 1m sensitivity (big ?), then they should have about the same volume capability.

    volume pedals

Sure, get a line level volume pedal like the Ernie Ball Active instrument pedal and put in the FX loop with the mix all the way up. I've used a volume pedal and purpose built FX loop attenuation in the loop of my F-100 with no problem and it works great. Of course, there is a little bit of...

The Express is Already Here !!!!

Yup, I'm the same guy. Thanks. I'm not sure I could part with my F-100, but that Express 5:25 mini-stack is calling my name.

The Express is Already Here !!!!

SWEET! Let us know all about the level of gain and voicing, how contour works, if there is a switching delay between channels, etc...

Probably obvious but.. (speaker hookup q)

Yes. I've used my F-100 2x12 combo like that a lot of times. It's good fun.
