Mesa bias their amps within a certain range and then tests and color codes their tubes that fall within this range. This allows you to select tubes to suit your playing style.......do want more dirt sooner or more headroom? Here is the info that I have on Mesa's color coding for their tubes...

Hey jonmy7, Based on your reply and what others are saying on the BB I guess the TA "is what it is" very hissy on the clean 15 & 25 watt settings. Compared to my other 1x12 combos, (2 have EL84's) the TA by far has the most hiss on clean settings. Now I'm wondering if a change of tubes...

The DC5 and Rectoverb are very different amps. I have a DC5 combo w/Electrovoice sitting on a Mesa oversize 1x12 3/4 back cab...fantastic rig. The DC5 has great cleans and the OD goes from classic rock to almost metal....w/great lead tones. I have played a Rectoverb and found the distortion...

Sell the LSS and get a DC3. The DC3 is absolutely the best amp I have played through. I've played the LSS and it is a nice amp...but the DC3 overall sounds better. My DC3 is one amp I'll never part with. YMMV. Greg

My DC5 combo also has the groundswitch. The one on eBay looks like it has been hacked.....I seriously doubt it came from the Mesa factory without a groundswitch. I too would pass on that one......good luck in your search!

I have a JB in the bridge of my tele and a Pearly Gates in the bridge of my strat. The JB has a fuller sound and can get very heavy, does classic rock to metal. The Pearly Gates has a great blues & classic rock crunch, I wouldn't really call it a metal PU....the mids sound a little scooped...

I tried a JB in the bridge of my LP with 500k pots....ice pick in the forehead...couldn't stand it. Yanked it and tried it in the bridge of my tele with a 250k pot....love it....that's where it is staying! Smooth & crunchie!

I have a DC5.......great amp.....impossible to get a bad tone out of a DC5. Seperate EQ, gain, volume and reverb for both channles, and an overall level control. Great cleans and OD, covers a lot of ground and styles. A DC5 won't do the Recto chug & thump, but it can get a pretty heavy sound...
