I'm still tempted to get a quad of STR415's for my MKIIC+ in place of the STR440's it has now.... would the difference in sound be obvious, or marginal ?

Yeah it's a 100 watter (I have an Aracom DAG attenuator fortunately...). As for tubes, Sylvania 415's would be perfect I guess, but they are so pricey! The amp has 440's now.

Is running a good EQ pedal in the loop going to have the same identical effect on the sound as having the onboard EQ? I'm asking because I was always using the onboard EQ on the MKIII I used to have, and I remember I wasn't in love with the non-EQ'd sound.

Thanks for the input guys! I should have said that my music genre is classic rock in the vintage vein. I used to own a MKIII blue stripe a few years ago, and I remember that I was always using the built in GEQ with a sort of "V" shape, I much preferred the sound that way for the music I play...

I suggest you to have it made by someone who works wood. I have just bought a Mark III head that was redone that way (not maple, but it looks very pretty) and cost about $120 according to what the previous owner told me.
