Owners of QUAD preamp, can you help me on Lead Master ch2?

I think with these settings you've got soooo much gain going into L2 that there's no headroom left for the lead master to act as a volume control. Having said that, my Quad seemed quite linear when turning up the L2 master... I'm wondering; do you have any effects in there and what are you...

Quad "Pull Deep" on chan 2

thanks for the info on the opto-switches! Not sure how to help with the 'Pull Deep' thing... I had a good play around with my Quad this weekend and there is a noticable (although subtle) difference when I engage the pull deep on R2 and L2. It basically adds a little more bottom end: just a...

Owners of QUAD preamp, can you help me on Lead Master ch2?

I'm trying out my Quad this weekend re: http://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=33349 I'll dial up your settings and see what happens with Lead-2 Master...

Quad "Pull Deep" on chan 2

Welcome to the forum... I'll check my Quad this weekend to see if I get a similar issue: I don't use L2 too much on my Quad but I'm sure the Pull Deep responds to R2, although it may be subtle. Incidentally; how much were your LDRs and where did you get them$ I payed 9euros each for the last...

    UK modders

Hi... What are you trying to mod and why?

So why does everybody dog the formula pre?

I really like my Formula, too. I found that the clean and blues channels have very usable tones. I only stopped using the Formula because the lead channel was not completely to my taste ...and dragging about a 220-110V step down transformer in my rack was doing my head in. I would be interested...

    Which cables for rack gear?

Not sure why you'll need TRS balanced cables between a Quad and a 50/50 or any effects... There are no balanced outputs on the back of a Quad to my knowledge and the runs are so short that I doubt noise will be a problem. I made all my interconnects using good quality VDC guitar lead cable...

    Mesa Quad Re-cap ??

Glad you fixed Lead-1. At least one LDR in my Quad was totally dead; possibly the LED wasn't emitting or the LDR had broken down or something. Another LDR was intermittent and when I replaced it the tone on R1/L1 came up brighter, cleaner and much less noisy. Not sure what caused them to fail...

    Mesa Quad Re-cap ??

Either LDR-11 or LDR-13 but first check plate voltage through 82K resistor to pin1 of V23 (315Vdc ish). Mine was blown when I first powered it up. Does the volume for Lead-1 intermittently rise and fall and then disappear alltogether? If so, more likely LDR problem. If Lead-1 is completely dead...

    new stuff = questions!

The FCB1010 is cheap and cheerful: although it needs a mains supply (no phantom). It's tricky to program at first and will probably drive you mad but it's so cheap that you can just throw it into the street when you get sick of it!

    Formula Pre

I sold mine for £280GBP without footswitch. Went for a song, really. I should have put a Buy-It-Now of £350 and I bet I would have got that too... Don't even know why I sold it. Very reliable, flexible and very usable tones. Even better with the Andrew mod.

    Quad, G-Major Relay Question?

Its not pretty. But it works. You'll need 5 DTDP relays (the smaller the better), about 80mmX50mm of varoboard, a couple of 1/4" sockets and a few 1/4" jacks and some bits of wire. And preferably a nice little box to put it all in. And you also need to find 9 to 12Vdc from somewhere. I'm sure...

    Recapping a Quad

This is a really interesting post: I recapped my Quad a few months ago (as some of you know) along with replacing a load of other parts at the same time. My Quad was a wreck when I bought it (noisy clean channel, switching problems, intermittent buzzing/humming, crackly pots, lead-1 channel...

    Quad, G-Major Relay Question?

sure thing.... I'll try and scribble down a schematic this weekend.

    Quad, G-Major Relay Question?

It is possible to use the 2 relays in the FCB (or G-major) and convert them into 4 discreet switching signals for the Quad. I made up a little box with some switching transistors and some relays wired up so: R1 R2 Off Off =Ryth-1 Off On =Lead-1 On Off =Ryth-2 On On =Lead-2...

    Quad, G-Major Relay Question?

Yes, it's very doable... Why don't you use the two switch relays in the FCB to switch between Ryth-1 and Lead-1 and use the two relays in the G-Major to switch between Ryth-2 and Lead-2? The FCB's relays are fairly simple to set up.

    Recapping a Quad

It is just to say possible to recap without removing the whole board. I managed it but it was tricky. Remove all the sockets from the back panel and desolder the transformer wires you can tilt the board up about 45 degrees or so. Resoldering the lower 220uF was the most difficult part. Also, the...

Mesa Quad and a solid state power amp

Thanks for all your advice... I'm watching a couple of used and NOS Mullards / Brimars on the fleabay at the moment. I'm astonished how much money they're fetching (especially the NOS) but I'm determined to go all the way with this thing regardless of cost. I saw a NOS Tesla ECC803 with a...

Thanks for your thoughts! Actually; rolling off the low control is one thing I haven't tried yet.

Mesa Quad and a solid state power amp

Where am I going wrong???!!! I've got the same set-up: Quad into a Peavey Classic 50/50 just the same and I'm still just NOT QUITE THERE with the lead tone... This Quad was a wreck when I bought it:- new pots, caps, plate resistors and a total re-tube needed; improved the clarity and reliability...
