so i've been using a stock TS9 for months and i'm pretty happy with it. however, i wanted to improve my tone (cause i'm a tone freak) and wanted to know if the maxon OD-808 or the fulltone OCD would be a great improvement over the ibanez TS9.

i know money shouldn't be an indicator of quality (well, maybe yes, i guess! lol) but the TS9 is $99 and the 808 is $139 and the OCD is $143.10. is that telling me anything?

thoughts? or am i being too picky! :)

pjrake,

RE: "i know money shouldn't be an indicator of quality (well, maybe yes, i guess! lol) but the TS9 is $99 and the 808 is $139 and the OCD is $143.10. is that telling me anything?". No. In this case, the quality is sufficient that tonal preference is what matters.

RE: "...wanted to know if the maxon OD-808 or the fulltone OCD would be a great improvement over the ibanez TS9.". All depends on what you would consider an improvement. The baseline is the OD-808. The classic Tubescreamer. It cuts some of your bass, so it often gets credited with "tightening" your bass. It also has a noticeable upper-mid boost (around 1.6-3.2kHz), so it can help you cut through the mix a little and give some harmonic content back to your solos.

The TS-9 is a variation of the OD-808 that has a slightly tamer treble response, similar bass response, and about the same amount of mid boost, only the frequency center is lowered a bit (800Hz - 1.6kHz). In that respect, both pedals are quite similar and it comes down to a preference on mid boost.

The OCD is a much flatter frequency response unit. That means it has more bass overall, and the mids aren't especially boosted or cut. In that sense, it keeps your original guitar signal fairly intact. However, it does add a distinctive overdrive/distortion/gain sound to it, much more gain than the OD-808 or the TS-9, and will color your sound in that way, although users almost unanimously applaud the quality of that coloring. Used by itself through a clean amp channel, the OCD can sound much like a cranked Marshall if its gain knob is set high. In front of a Recto, with the gain knob rolled back quite a bit, it provides a combined sound that is just about as good as it gets. You get the tasty mid-range and harmonic response that the Recto is missing, but you don't get the harsher, more raspy midrange boost that the Tubescreamer gets criticized for, and you keep all of the big bass response that you want.

For me personally, I prefer the sound of the OCD, though I also own a Keeley-modified SD-1 which is very much in the mold of the Tubescreamer, as well as several personally-modified Tubescreamer types. Actually, I wanted to tweak the sound of the OCD just slightly to my own tastes, so I built my own from scratch to my own specifications. Hi, I'm Chris, and I'm a tweakaholic.

They are totally different pedals. The Maxon will be a *better* (subjective) tubescreamer, big midrange boost. The OCD is more transparent and better in my opinion tone wise, however it has a midrange scoop inherent to it. So think of them as opposites... if you like the TS9 but want a better version of it, pick up the maxon... if you're looking for a true bypass non-coloring (except the midrange suck, which is subtle, but present) pedal, pick up the OCD.

I bought a $20 mod kit from ebay seller tubescreamerheaven and modded my stock ts9 and it sounds tits. It doesn't cut as much low end and it smoothed out the mid hump. It also comes with 2 chips, one being the texas instruments chips used in the vintage 808's.

I owned a ts9 and now i own a ocd. The OCD is a better built pedal, and with its hp lp toggle switch its pretty much two pedals in one. The OCD has more gain, it doesnt have the mid hump. I definitely like the ts9 but in my opininion the ocd sounds better and is a lot better made.

I just got me a maxon 808 thats been modded to tomorrow and back and includes the 4 chips maxon has used since 72 and i must say that for 165, its incredible. the guy rigged up a quick connect for me so i can just pop the chips in and out and so far im digging it like crazy. Each chip handles "tone" (mids) differently and has pretty much made my boogie have the biggest balls on the block. It's really transparent to my ears as well. I'd just say to go try out a few for yourself and see what sounds and feels right to you but theres definitely some interesting adjustments that can be gotten through mods. I love having the 4 chips so I really have control over whats going on and not limited to just what the tone knob allows. if i dont want mids, i put in the texas instruments 4558P chip, if so, I use one of the 2 chinese chips. my favorite so far has got to be the original 72 chip though. No wonder people praise vintage pedals... well worth it.

The OCD is great. If you're looking for something with a mid-hump then check out the Fulldrive II.

I've never been a big fan of Maxon pedals.

Add yet another fan of the OCD here.

I use mine mainly to boost leads, but I'll also use it as a slight gain for certain songs. It's a very wonderful pedal IMO, and very vesatile.
