So, hey guys. I've got myself a Single Rectifier that I bought about a year ago, right of out of the box. Still has all the stock preamp tubes and a set of Mesa EL34s. I absolutely adore it, but I'm a little bit curious about something.
The expected hiss on the dirty channel is a little bit louder than I'd like it to be. I'm still not entirely certain that it's not all just in my head, I'm a little bit anal-retentive about these kinds of things. Here's the situation, basically.
CH1 is silent, CH2 is hissy both with the gain completely down and the input cable unplugged. Settings on CH2 are:
Ch.Mode: Vintage
Ch.Vol: 12 o'clock
Presence: 9 o'clock
Bass: 10 o'clock
Mid: 2 o'clock
Treble: 10 o'clock
Gain: 1 o'clock
Like I said, it may just be in my head, but I just want to be sure. I did the pencil tap test on all the tubes, they were all dead silent except for V1, which exhibited a little bit of microphonics and, from what I understand, that's to be expected in the V1 position. If there is anything wrong, I suspect it's little more than noisy preamp tubes.
What I'm asking is this; can anyone think of any reason that a well treated, year-old Single Rectifier with no issues might be a little noisy on CH2? Like I said, there's noise both with the gain knob completely down and the input cable unplugged, and CH1 is silent. No anomalies on the pencil tap test except for a bit of microphonics on V1. If not, can anybody recommend a preamp tube set I can use to lower the noise floor if I decide I can't just deal with the normal hiss?
I would not be surprised to discover if this all was in my head, I just want to make sure.
