Thought the eBay listings had too little information, although I am very interested in #4. Asked the seller a question right as it listed and he still hasn't responded, but maybe with time.

Thank you so much, Rampage, for the Harmony Central listing, I had not seen it! I'm offering the bloke the $1300 now.

Any remarks on the VooDoo modded amp? I've never even seen a Mesa Boogie (Other than at Tool's shows) so am pretty nervous about buying one.

I have never tried a Voodoo modded two channel and I am not quite sure if the Voodoo mod is worth it on one. The mod itself is meant to just tighten up the amplifier a little more and give it more clarity. The whole reason behind why people like the two channels (or so I believe?) is that they already have a tighter sound than the modern three channels. I think I would rather just buy the original and hold onto it to keep more of a collectors piece.

I have a rackmount rec i am asking $1300 plus shipping. Great condition and sound awesome. PM me if interested.

I spent some time in upstate NY and had a JCM800 modded for more gain by Trace, all the EQ was usable afterward...night and day. Excellent job he does at his very nice shop. All the tech guys are uber tone hounds and really know what they're doing.
The Deluxe mod Dual Rec I tested out there at his shop was absolutely stellar...no hype.

$1300. for a voodoo modded DR is pretty darn aaiiight.

my .02

Thanks to rampage for the guitar center links.

ThunderMonkey, your two cents are really helping me make a decision, good to know that the VooDoo is an improvement to the original.

I have narrowed my decision to two amps:

1. A mid-1990's blackface two channel Dual Rectifier, owner doesn't know when the tubes were last replaced if they even have been. Has never been gigged with, comes with hardshell flight case.
Wants $1050. No pics, but it is in pristine condition as its always in its case, no dust. It's in my town already, so that's a plus too.

2. A 1998 two channel Dual Rectifier with new tubes and had a VooDoo Deluxe Modification done to it in 2006. Has probably been gigged with a few times.
Wants $1400 shipped, as you can see in the pics its pretty dusty:

I'm very torn between these two amps and advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

You guys rock.

EDIT: How much would it cost to replace the tubes in a DR, anyone know? Thanks again!

i'd go for the 90's blackface. sounds like a steak to me.

tubes depend on how much you want to spend. Like anything else, you get what you pay for. I would recommend the old Mesa str420's for an old rectifier. It's what the amps were made with and they sound really good. my shot in the dark would be +/- $100.

I really appreciate the advice, you could be saving me hundreds of dollars here.

Is it not always a good idea to get the newer head? The VooDoo is a '98 and the blackface's owner doesn't know how old it is, but he said it's at least 10 years old.

Elpelotero, what do you mean by steak? Like, a juicy, tender, tone machine? :D

I'm a Mesa Boogie noob and you guys are my only hope.

Anyone else have a guess on how much it would cost to completely retube a DR with good, new tubes?

Hey Leng

Very Important !!!!!
Ask the guy with the blackface DR what the serial # is ?

We can then date the head for you !

If it's @ 10 years old that puts it in the same class revision as the 98 (Revision G) the exact same head as far as components goes.

If it's the same revision (by date) then....getting the VooDoo modded DR would be much a much nicer deal...even if it IS a few hundred more.

Very Important !!!!!!!!

Find out what the serial # is.....asap !

There are plenty of resources here to get the best tubes, Doug at http://www.dougstubes.com is the major go to guy for a lot of people here.

Thank you so much ThunderMonkey, I'll ask him ASAP.

EDIT: The bloke with the blackface will give me the serial number when he emails me the pics, may take a few days since his head is at a friend's house. Hate to make the VooDoo guy wait, he might end up selling it to someone else. I wish I could afford to buy both and sell the one I like least.

So, if it turns out to be in the revision before the '98, does that make it a better head / have better tone? Thanks again, you guys know your stuff!

Search for Rectifier Lineage here on the board, it's been discussed, debated, argued about and discussed some more and everybody has their opinion BUT the older 2 channels ARE the best tone machines on the planet !

Mesa made 4 revisions since the first ones made in '92 C & D, then late 92 through 93 Revision F (which is what I have) and then finally G which includes the 2 channels through the end of the 90's including all the modern 3 channels since, starting in 2000.
They're all great amps, but it's a fact that the earlier 2 channels with serial efx loop ARE superb tone generators !
