Hello.....

I recently bought a Mesa Mark IV 1x12 combo. I love the amp, especially as a tone alternative to my vintage Bandmaster.

Im looking for an extension cabinet to pair with the combo. However, no contemporary Mesa 1x12 designs seem to pair well with my Mark IV.

Ive done a bit of research and am Im now looking for a Mesa 1x12 Compact Open Back Cabinet, 8ohm, and preferably the Black Shadow 90w speaker.

Unfortunately, this cabinet is no longer in production.

If you have a Compact Open Back cab you would consider selling, please let me know. Thanks.

Jay

although i love the sound of an open back compact cab (have 2), imo, you should look a thiele cab also, since you have the combo. same width as the combos, fits like a glove. more bass (tighter) and fullness.

you'll have them the mini stack from Hell

Hi Vigo. Thanks for the response. I've thought about the Thiele, for exactly the reason you like it. However, my Mark4 is 18" wide and 11" deep. The "Compact Open Back" cabinet appears to be the only cab ever made by Mesa that has those same dimensions, Tolex and speaker. Im assuming it was designed to pair with my combo.

Im also under the impression, maybe ignorantly, that the cab should stack on top of the combo. This would keep the center of gravity low and, I'm assuming the feet on the cab will line up with what appears to be caster/feet cups on the top of the combo. Am I correct in my thinking on this?

I've thought about buying a different cab, as virtually any other Mesa cab is both wider and deeper. Assuming I stack the combo on top of the cab, I'd prefer the wider base under a 90lb combo. But maybe Im over thinking all this….

I'd appreciate your thoughts. thanks.

The Thiele dimensions are 18 7/8 X 12 3/4 and will fit under your combo just fine...

Here is my Mk II combo with a custom Thiele cabinet I bought last year:

Hi Mike. Thanks for the response.

I realize the combo will fit very well on top of the cab. Most cabs are larger in volume, including DxW, such that my combo could easily stack on top of the cab.

My concern is that the stack would be so top heavy. Im concerned about it getting tipped. Though that might be a low risk. Ye, doesn't it make intuitive sense that the cab "should" stack on top of the combo?

The problem with my notion the cab should stack on the combo is that most Mesa 1x12 cabs have dimensions won't stack well on top of the combo. The "Compact Open Back" cab has almost exactly the same dimensions (Depth x Width) as my combo. So….I figured thats the one thats designed to stack on top of my amp.

Am I over thinking this??

Yes Jay you are overthinking it.

No one stacks a 1x12 or a thiele on top of the combo.
The top of a Mark series combo isn't large enough (Depth and Width) to allow putting a 1x12 or Thiele on top of it.
So your thinking that you can put a 1x12 on top of your combo is wrong. It won't work

It's usually done the other way around. The combo sits on top of the 1x12 or Thiele.

Many of us have the amp in head cab and stack the head on top of a 1x2, Thiele, or both.

Fwiw a Thiele actually has a greater depth than a 1x12.
Therefore it's a more stable "platform" than a 1x12 for stacking a combo on top of it.

Sure it might be considered a little top heavy but it's not going to tip over.
Well.... if you fall into it in a drunken stupor it might get knocked over ;-)

Fwiw my set up is head on top, 1x12 in the middle, Thiele on the bottom.

Yup, it's good that you are being cautious, but you are over-thinking it...
The vast majority that use a combo with an extension cab, stack the combo on top of the cab. I have played hundreds of gigs like this and have never had my amp fall over. I even stack a 6-space rack on top of the combo - you just have to center it properly. IMO, a Thiele cab sounds even better with a combo than an open-back, and the compact Thiele cab is slightly deeper than the compact open-back so it is even more stable. I have both types of cabs and I always use the Thiele with my combo.

The only time you really need to worry about the amp tipping over is on a flimsy stage like those modular stages that tend to bounce.
