I always notice a lot of keyboard jockeys or guys in guitar shops slamming MB and why do you think that is? I personally think most just associate it with the dual rectifier and all those terrible bands that didn't take the time to really work the controls. Plus, they themselves may have expected it to be like a Marshall (AKA plug in and play) so as a result, they got frustrated when they couldn't get the tone they wanted immediately and just dissed them. I remember reading an old article about Soundgarden that when Kim Thayil got the Dual Rectifier he said it took about a week to really learn how the EQ affected everything else but once he did, he could get so many great tones out of it and look at the albums Superunknown and Down On The Upside to prove it.

What's your take on it?

In a way it is like a 'natural selction' type thing. It separates the tube amp tweakers from the 249 preset types. You must have stumbled into a music store that has an employee or two that specialize in that drive-thru tone mentality you get by hitting preset 187 or 206 or 122 or 87 or 2 or.....

There are plenty of good music stores where tube amps and the time it takes to learn how to stroke them are respected. Good music stores with working musicians on the job there are great sources of all kinds of knowledge. There are a few guys on here that post much technical goodness that work in them.

Maybe because the "you can't get a bad tone out of it" mentality doesn't work with Booiges. Their controls are really far ranging and aren't for the meek.

I once had a GC employee tell me that the Triple Recto is the "Lamborghini of amps"

haha well...I guess that makes Diezel's VH4 the Bugatti Veyron of amps....

I don't think MB get's dissed anywhere near Line 6 or Crate for that matter. But if you must...

1. Because they're American and it's trendy.
2. The Boogie Tone is patented and hard to replicate.
3. Aimlessly negative people just being a$$holes.

I think Mesa gets dissed because they're not Marshalls or Fenders.

Marshall makes some great amps as does Fender. But they're not Mesa Boogies. Mesa does have its own tone, which I think upsets some of the traditionalists.

A lot of the music I like was made using Marshall or Fender amps. Hey, that's cool and I'm happy for them. I respect Jimmy Page and Slash, but I don't want sound just like them. I respect SRV, but I don't want to sound like them.

That's a really good way of putting it. I've tried several other amplifier manufacturer's gear, and it sometimes seems like each one is trying to emulate the other with their tone. Mesa amps seem to be a little distinct, as are some other higher end makers, but, to me there is just something about a rectifier's (to some it's the mark, stilleto, or lone star) gain sound that suits me well, and the sound that I am after. I don't despise the other maker's stuff, but, I'd rather play a Boogie 8)

I really don't hear MB getting "dissed" all that much except for maybe one fairly frequent thing. And that is the fact that their bias is not readily adjustable so people assume you are being stuck with their tubes.
While this is not entirely true (lotsa vendors know what works in Mesa), I could see why some get pissed off about this.
What gets me is when someone says that "This amp totally blows away a Mesa" as though they have found some kind of 'holy grail' of an amp. I mean, I respect their opinion and I know everyone hears differently, but I have tried some very expensive amps and while they all sound extremely good to me, and have their own unique tones, I have yet to hear anything that will "blow away" my Stiletto...or my Triaxis and 50/50, or virtually any Mesa amp I've heard/played.
Once you get to this level of quality in an all tube amp, it boils down to personal choice, IMHO.
But hey, I could be going deaf, so who knows?

I'd imagine that someone who experienced bad service from Mesa (or know someone who did) may have a less than glowing opinion. I can see how it could generate bad press.
And here's a good one...people getting angry because their ordered Mesa's took too long to be delivered. If Mesa's were so bad, who would give a rat's butt?

Just my $0.02! :)

Very true. The clerk at Mom & Pop's music that only carries Peavey, Fender, and Marshall, is going to tell me they are way better than Mesa. It is all about making money and selling amps. Of course the amp I have in MY store is better than the one in the store down the street....

And the idea that amp X totally kills a Mesa is laughable. Maybe the guys friend that plays a Mesa sucks on guitar

I remember being in the Navy on a ship, deployed, the only amp you could have what a headphone type. Peace out and enjoy your Mesa's, whatever flavor you are lucky enough to own.

Its mostly Johnny Come Lately bandwagon **** from people who have never spent any time with the amps. I think most of it is directed at the rectos. I know the marshall guys arent fans of them and Im cool with that. They are kinda the Anti-Marshall.

I agree, most of the negativity is probably directed toward the Rectos.

Interesting subject. Maybe it is because I own Mesa/Boogies and Marshalls or it is because my local shop carries both along with Fender and several "boutique" lines but I really don't hear much complaining about the different brands. Typically, it is either the usual "I like your rig better then mine." or "My rig is better then your rig." type of stuff. Nothing really more then banter.

I for one like that all my amps have a very distinctive character about them. That is what keeps the tone drive alive.
