who's got the best metal tone?

When I think tone metal, the first person that comes to mind is Petrucci. He is the king at finding great metal tone. Awake had the biggest sounding guitars out of any album EVER. Train of Though is heavy as crap also. If you don't that that's good metal tone, you are on crack. 8)

Job for a cowboy has amazing tone on Genesis. KsE has great tone on there latest albums... Mastodon has always had a very crunchy and earthy sound... SYL, well its SYL :twisted:

The guitars, bass and drums in DT are all amazing. It's the cheesy synths and lame *** vocals I can't stand. Very non-metal.

It's an interesting phenomenon, the whole east-coast metalcore scene cause a lot of those guys have fantastic tone and it's due to the fact that there's this huge group of guys who are all friends and have been playing and hanging out together for over a decade. Killswitch, Unearth and All That Remains would by my picks for the top tone in the current metal scene. This has a lot to do with really good tube amps as someone mentioned before (framus, engl, VHT, the occasional 5150), the Maxon OD808 that all these guys use, and one important third factor: Adam Dutkiewicz. The creative driving force behind Killswitch Engage has produced all of the above artists and that guy has an ear for guitar tone like no other. There's a video in the Artist Spotlight section of the Mesa website where Joel, the other guitarist for KSE, says that Adam D. has one particular Mesa cab that he uses for nearly every recording he produces and that it hasn't left the studio in many years.

In All That Remains, I love how you can clearly pick out the two different guitar tones between Mike and Oli. I like it when a band has two guitars that sound like they fit the band, but also sound different enough than you can easily tell who is playing.

The tone that James has sounds like **** is coming apart at the seams, it's so gnarly and throaty sounding.

my vote goes to the boys from BTBAM- the new album is, in a word, breathtaking. paul has a really distinctive sounding lead tone. they use this stuff (dual recto's, tubescreamer):

btbam is dope (see sig haha).the tone is great right now thats all i listen to. well that and the black dahlia murder. the tone on nocturnal is amazing. either colors or nocturnal gets my vote. nocturnal is a much simpler album and colors has alot more going on so whatever i feel like is the winner of that day :wink:

for rythm its a toss up, Pat from Cannibal & Erik Rutan from Morbid Angel/Hate Eternal. solo/lead tones Rutan all the way.

Has anyone mentioned Devin Townsend? If not, I think his is the best. Petrucci has a good tone for what he does but not for the brutal stuff like strapping young lad and devin's solo stuff.

check out pete loeffer's tone on chevelle's "this type of thinking." i read somewhere (guitar world i think) where petrucci even commented on how great pete's sound was!

might not be everyone's cup of tea (music wise) but the tone is sick!

Definitely man, and the new cd, Vena Sera has some amazing guitar tone as well. He REALLY knows how to dial in a Mark IV.........he's one of the main reasons I want to get one (besides Metallica)!

My son turned me on to "Between the Buried and Me" and I commented on what a great Mesa boogie Mark sound they have on their most recent album on the first track, right out of the gate barking just like my Mark lll. He googled their amp set ups and it confirmed my thought - Mesa amps. Their music is refreshing, it reminds me of Yes and Emerson, Lake and Palmer, which back when I was starting out was tough to play. BTBAM is fun to play along with, but tougher. At least it is clear and concise so there's no guessing what notes they're playing.
