Can't quite put my finger on it other than I just like how the V30 sounds vs the MC90. I guess it took some of the brightness away and just seems to have more complexity. Never really liked MC90s (or CL80s) all that much in the first place. I also have EL34s in the amp. The combination gives it a pretty passable Marshall sound in certain modes.

i do not have a combo but it is worth mentioning that if you swap speakers try some speaker with equal or greater wattage than the amp's output (specially if you are going to be pushing the amp hard)

good luck

Yeah, this comes up anytime someone mentions putting a V30 in a Mark V. Chances are you'll never be in a situation where you'll be playing the amp loud enough to blow it. First, V30s are pretty tough and conservatively rated. Second, if you ever did blow a V30, they're around and cheap enough that you just go get a new one. There's always the option to run the V at 45 watts if it makes you feel better. I run my Ch1 on 90 but the others on 45.

I dont have the combo but I much prefer V30s over C90s . I have them in all my cabs . I bought the 1X12 wide body front ported cab and opted for a V30 as a special order in that cab as well

I may be the only one on this forum that loves the sound out of my MkV combo with the stock C90 speaker.......and that is fine......I just thought I'd chime in with my .02

BTW.....I have gone back to the stock MB 6L6s after spending several months experimenting with the optional EL34s....

Both sounded good, but overall I really prefer the sounds offered with the 6L6s in this amp for my needs.

We shot a video A/B comparison with the mark v combo, one with the C90 and the other with a Vintage 30. You can watch it here:

In almost any application I prefer the vintage 30. :D

As far as the Vintage 30 not being able to handle the power, we have sold a ton of Mark V combos with vintage 30 speakers and have not had a single one develop a speaker problem. Besides, why would boogie ship them (at out request) AND warranty the speaker if there was going to be problems with the power handling.

I had a v30 in my combo, and it was great, especially mixed with another 1x12. Worked well live, but sitting in front it was a bit harsh. It is a lower watt seaker, so as long as you arent running your mark with master super high, you will be ok. I dont know anyone who normally plays their amps with master at 6-7 and channel at 6-7.

I too, like my stock speaker just fine.

It hasn't even broken in, and it has the stock Mesa tubes in it, but I find plenty of richness and complexity in the sounds I'm getting! I don't feel that there's any harshness in the high end at all - it seems really smooth to me, actually. Easy to find a good sound without getting icepicky.

Of course this is my first really high-grade amp, and I understand that other tubes and speakers can make worlds of difference - but for now, the stock MkV Combo sounds are more than good enough for me!

Regards,

Jim

At first I thought the V90 was to sterile sounding...But now after quite a few gigs..it really sounds great. smooth and creamy. I use my extention cab about 30% of the time and it is not broken in as well as the speaker in the combo. These speakers esp the v90 take awhile to break in. If you don't like the sound of the stock speaker, just give it awhile. Like a new guitar, it gets better with time.

I don't have the combo. I opted for the head and a Widebody 1x12 instead.

I do like the C90 in the open back cab, but I like the V30 better.

V30 is a more aggressive sounding speaker than the smoother c90. Depends what tones you are going for as to which one you will gravitate towards. V30 is a GREAT match for the Mark series amps. Tends to sound better in a closed back (to my ears).

Give it a shot! It's not very expensive and can easily be reversed if you decide it's not for you.

To me, having both is ideal. The V30 has the great mid range aggressive sound and the C90 is very in rich in highs and lows. Put them together and you a nice complex full sound.

Not a bad idea actually. I may have to put a C90 in the bottom of my 2x12 vert cab!

I don't own a Mark V combo but after hearing HaggertysMusic's comparison I think the V30 would be a better choice - for me, at least.

Agreed. I really like the v30 opposed to the c90.

Just my ears I guess...
