So, Ive got my mark V....which Mesa 4x12 cabinet do you guys prefer? The Recto or the Stiletto for this amp? Thanks.

I was leaning towards the recto too. I tried both, albeit at pretty low volumes. It seemed to have a bigger sonic footprint. To me anyway.

It does.

Some people will complain about the extra low end but it's easily dealt with using the amp's EQ, and if you're using it live an SM57 will provide a natural cut off anyway.

IMO, if the Mark V/Recto 4x12 is too loose there's probably something wrong with your right hand...

I prefer the recto cab. But many people prefer the tight response that the Stiletto cabs offer. They also seem to have a mid range hump to them. Haggertys does a good side by side video of them. I actually really like the low end grunt that the recto cab provides. And if it starts sounding a little too loose there are ways to tighten it up through EQ and technique.

I'm going to have to be different and vote for the Stiletto cab. :p
There's a frequency that stands out with this cab that really sounds great (to my ears) in a band setting. The Recto cab has a boomier low end that sounds thick and powerful by itself but fights with a bassist.

I have a Recto for my V. I love it. But it is all about preference. I have heard that the stilleto has a more tight end which could be used for certain styles over others. I love my recto for the bottom end. It definitely stands out from my band and I love it.

I'm sure if you asked really really really really nicely to compare the two side by side at a music store they wouldn't say no
This would be my only guess as to which one you'd prefer. I mainly play metal and have realized there are many different metal tones that can be attained and desired!

Strange question

Both Stiletto and Recto 4 x 12 are equipped with V30(and same wood/albeit a Stilleto is smaller).

Where does the different sound come from?

Thanks

Roland

Well Roland the answer is air. And it does make a difference. For the Marks i also prefer either traditional or stilleto cabs. I find the new rectos to be very boomy and loose. And while the hand does have a lot to do with it, stacking the cards out of your favor doesn't help. And the reason for the boominess is the size of the cab. The recto cabs are really big. Even compared to Marshall or Peavey cabs. And it affects how the cones vibrate. My vote is for the smaller cabs. Again i agree that 90% of tone is your hands but making that other 10% perfect can be the difference between a good tone and a great tone. My 2 cents.

Peace,
Joshua

Try the EVH 4x12. I am currently using it with my Mark V and it sounds great. It comes standard with EVH speakers with are designed after Eddies old Greenbacks.
Great cabinet.

This is a cool topic, since I´m thinking about selling my Marshall cab and buying a MESA cab...

But living so far away makes trying the cabs impossible, so the information gathered in topics like this really will help to make my choice

Thanks :D

guitarp77,

You won't regret trading your Marshall for a Rectifier 4x12 unless your Marshall is a 60s or 70s model (one of the ones that were really well built). The lows and lower mids are much punchier on the Mesas.

Sadly no...it is a 1960 from 1 or 2 years ago...

It is good, but the Mesa cab is a must now...it seems like the diference is HUGE!

I've owned both and I prefer the Stiletto/Traditional Cab, it's tighter and more focused. Petrucci and Mark Morton use them instead of the Standard Rectifier cab.

How about a Road King 4 x 12? My MKV sounds pretty darn good thru it but I have never tried the other two cabs being discussed to offer a comparison (sorry). Do the two open speakers disqualify the RK from the list??

Aiming for a Recto now!

The slant version, so hopefully everything will work out in the next few days :)

Will let ya know how pissed off the neighbours are
