I'm having a hard time deciding as i've been playing the red stripe a lot since im still waiting onthe IV to be fixed. I have really tweaked a lot and find my settings (treb 7 bass 1.5 mids 4 pres 1.5 treb pulled)are really sticking in a certain area. Graph eq wise the outside two slides are very slightly above center line and middle slider slightly above the bottom line. Killer sounds and im finding it sounds very similar to what i remember the iv sounding like.. the iv has this upper harmonic sound to it but more round if memory serves me correctly.

Anyways, what are YOUR fav mark amps?

Mark V.

I had a Mark III red stripe, fully loaded (GEQ, Simul, Rev, EVM-12L). It sounded great, but it drove me nuts that I couldn't use all three channels live due to the imbalance in volumes when switching.

The Mark V fixes the problems associated with shared EQs. The low power settings also sound better (Mark III sounded best left on full power, even at lower volumes). It also has way better reverb and a better effects loop. Plus the solo boost function is sweet.

I'm also going to toss in the LoneStar, as it's basically an updated Mark I as far as I'm concerned. The LoneStar is f*ckin' sweet. Great clean, with a killer sounding dirt channel that can do anything from a rocked up Fender, to a kind of a Marshall sound, to a full on Mark I sound. Not as versitile as the Mark V, but defenetly a great sounding amp.

i like my red stripe mark III better than my mark IV!i have a thread on the vintage amps section with my red stripe in action, i cant get my IV to sound like that...

I've only owned the IV and the V. I prefer the V because of the first two channels, but still think the IV's Lead channel is all around better... it's more authentic and easy to play for me. However, the V's Lead channel can do a few things the IV's Lead can't, most notably a super clean high gain tone.

My mk III red str. coli is my fav..on the 1/2 power setting it sounds almost EXACTLY like my mk III simul in high power mode, and with the coli in high power mode, it has an authority like no other..and both of my red st. III's sound a little more open and aggresive than my mk IV B....

Still in love with my Mark IV. Not that it is superior to any other Mark as far as tone, it just does everything I could want it to do. I really only use two channels, clean and lead, so the versatility of the V would be wasted on me.

Mark IV...just my preference. Was going to buy a III years ago, then heard the IV. Haven't played a V yet, so I can't comment on it.

If you owned a Mark V believe me you'd use channel 2. 8)

wow im surprised a few people with red stripes preferences over ivs.. im kind of in that same boat but when my markiv comes back from the repair shop i'll really test this. I have been playing the red stripe and really starting to dig its sounds.. it has more aggressiveness to it, it seems at least that way in my mind.

I went from a III red Stripe to a IV"A" and couldn't be happier. If I didn't already own a IV I'd own a V. I tried one a while ago and really liked it, but since I just noodle at home these days I can't really justify dropping $2,000.00 on something
I really don't need.
I 'loved the III I had as well, the reason I love my IV"A" is because this particular one (for some reason) really sounded close to my III, but "bigger", and of course has all of the obvious improvements over the III's channel swithcing.

I like my IVb from what I've played on. I've played a couple IIBs, a red, blue and no stripe III and a couple Vs. I was saving up for a V when I got my hands on a mint IV for $1,050. The V is a bit more versatile but I found that my ears prefer the IV overall. The IIs dominated in the clean and low gain department and the IIIs could scream in the high gain department all day long but I just couldn't share that many controls across 3 channels. My IV seemed to be the best in terms of tone/features/price for me, I don't want to label it as a compromise because I don't feel I compromised anything. It was simply the most logical choice for my ears, head and wallet.

Definitely loving my IIIs without a doubt!

My red and purple have been treating me extremely well. Dropped my NOS tubes in my red and the thing has got me playing for all sorts of hours on end. I'm 'bout to order up some more for the purple so I can finally have these running together in one rig. 8)

That was one of the selling points to me regarding my IVA, beside the tone/sound of course (to my hears and my perference). I had a hard time with setting those controls the same for all three channels. I was already to buy one then heard the IV. Of course this was 19 years ago....though the III still had an amazing sound. If I had the $$$ I'd of gotten both :)
