I know this is a mesa forum so there is going to be some bias but I'm willing to consider any brand amp.

I'm looking for a head with great cleans and great distortion. I think the roadster would be the perfect amp for me but I want to know some amps that are comparable. I mainly play Alter Bridge, Creed, Nickelback, Metallica, 3 Doors Down, Tool etc. I want at least two channels 50-100 watts, reverb and effects loop.

The tone I want is:
-thick
-huge
-a lot of sustain
-warm
-rich

I don't want:
-Gain that sounds like sandpaper
-gritty
-grainy
-harsh
-sterile
-piercing highs or annoying sounding mids

Any recommendations are appriciated. thanks

Look into a Mark IV or Tremoverb. All the bands you mentioned used a recto (With the exception of Metallica) pretty much all the time for their sound, but the down fall of the recto is the clean channel. And it can sound kind of buzzy if your not into tweaking.

For all of what you want I think you can go which a bunch of amps like the DC-10, Mark IV, Mark V, 2 Channel Recto, Tremoverb or Roadster. The difference is going to be in the voicing. The Rectos have their voice, love it or hate it... part of that voicing sometimes can include the imfamous sizzle which in some rectos can sound fizzy if you run the presence too high. In the recto family the 2 channel Rectos, tremoverb and Roadster are the smoothest. The Roadster has the best cleans of the bunch IMO

The Mark series can definitely be as big, as heavy and are wonderfully smooth. While the bass isnt quite as big as the Recto, the Mark series are no slackers and in fact through the right cab (Recto cab or Mills  ) you can get an enormous low end, with smooth mids and aggressive highs with nothing sounding thin or shrill. The cleans on all the Marks sound awesome, and the Mark V sounds even better, maybe the best Mesa has put out. IMO if you go towards the Mark series and your budgeting a Roadster take a good look at the Mark V.

The DC-10 and DC-5 lie somewhere in between the Mark series and the Recto, with the smooth agression of the Marks and a little more bottom end like the Rectos. The cleans are pretty spectacular as well. Since you can only find them used they're an incredible value.
