Where do you mic a Thiele 1x12 for live use? On the speaker as normal? Somewhere on the port?

I don't have experience with mic'ing the Theile per se. However, as a fledgling sound man, I'd say you'd have to be careful giving more orientation to the port OR the speaker itself. I think I'd put the mic about a foot away from the front with a slight emphasis toward the edge of the speaker. And - rather than adjusting the directionality, I'd move it further away if it's boomy or harsh.

I've never seen a speaker cabinet mic'd from a foot away on a live stage. Studio is totally different.

I've mic'd my EVM-loaded Thiele (sm57 and Senn 607 ...or was it a 609?) about 6" off the grill and centered between the port and edge of speaker, but angled slightly toward the speaker. I didn't do lots of testing/experimentation of placement, though, so YMMV ...but it did sound "right" in the house if that's any indication :)

Thanks!

Is this attached to a combo? I usually have them just mic the amp. Interested to try it though.

Nope. TA15 head or Matchless Lightning 15 head.

The sound guy put the mic about 2" away from the grille toward the side of the speaker by the port. Sounded perfect out front. He couldn't believe I was running only 15 watts and cleanly too (on the Top Boost side and 15 watts with gain on the Hi 1 side). Very loud. I wanted to turn down but the guys said leave it. :)
