My cleans are really nice, but there is a little too much hair in them. I have tried messing with the Gain and the Master, but it just seems to take away a lot of the sparkle. I posted this in another thread, but thought I should start a new one for it.

What about some tone settings for the clean channel?
I'm looking for the cleanest tones possible. Right now, it is very fat and warm with just the right amount of breakup. This sounds really wonderful, but some of our originals have sparkling clean passages.
Here are my settings:
Gain - noon
Treb - 1:00
Mids - 11:00
Bass - 5:00
Pres - noon
Verb - 9:00
Mast - 11:45

Now I know that I can get better cleans with the gain lower, but the problem is, the channel doesn't start singing until the knob is at noon.

I seem to remember reading somewhere about using the High Gain setting and keeping the Gain on the channel really low. Can't seem to find it now though......

I replaced most of my preamp tubes with extremely low gain early breakup tubes and that really did the trick. i mean its a rectifier for Christ's sake, the last thing you need is MORE gain. it really brought out the versatility of my amp.

I tried and tried and tried. replaced two of the tubes with balanced 12at7s, made the gain much more clear and easier to manage, and the clean channel came to life real fast. just try it, if you hate it, swap em back out.

I really don't like AT7's for most things. But I did find this.....

Clone the ORG channel to RED and hit the ORG Gain switch on the back to clean. I run my Gain around 10' o clock.

this is on a 2ch triple recto but i'm sure it will work.

+1, that's what I do.

I've gotten passable cleans out of my TR 2 channel. Another way is to crank the presence knob (which actually is a treble roll-off and when dimed, doesn't have an effect on the signal), turn the mids down some for a Fender chime, and leave the bass around noon. Then, keep the gain low and the volume high.

I really don't like 12AT7s either, normally - or not for 'gain' stages, anyway. I love them as phase inverters - I've put one in every Mesa I've ever owned and it improved every one of them for clarity, depth, headroom and dynamics.

I also prefer 12AT7s as reverb drivers (can you tell I've owned some Fenders too? :)), but in the Tremoverb the problem is that V5 is shared between being the reverb driver and also a gain stage. No matter, try a 12AT7 there too, you may be surprised! I use Philips/ECG 12AT7s, they're still plentiful and relatively cheap by NOS standards.

I also found that all-NOS for every other tube really improved the clarity and the clean tones as well. It's worth it. I'm currently running GE 12AX7s and clear-top 6L6s. You probably don't need NOS rectifiers, but stay away from Sovteks. (You probably know that!)

Settings - usually Bold/Tube, gain 10 o'clock, treble about 1 o'clock (this one most important for fine tuning), middle 9 o'clock, bass 5 o'clock, presence 12 o'clock, master 5 o'clock. (Roughly.) Yes, bass and master full up. Loop active master always on, usually around half but depends on venue. Guitar - PRS Standard 22 or Rickenbacker 381.

That's the thing I liked the most on the DC's was the separate tube paths. From a circuit board design point, I guess I can see why they got away from it, but man does it make things easy to dial in.
Plus, if one channel goes out, you can usually make it to the end of the gig by swapping a few tubes around.

I'll give those settings a try later on today!

I like your settings for cleans, but I find if I turn the Presence up to 2 or 3 o'clock, I like it even better.

Thanks for the input,
Mike

I went and checked it again and found that I do too :). It's the Red channel I generally have around 12 o'clock. I don't stick to just one setting, I adjust it a lot depending on what I want to do. I do usually have the bass up full for clean sounds though - in fact, I do on almost any amp (or at least nearly so). It's not just about adding bass, I find it makes the cleans 'breathe' more, and it's a good way of getting a decent tube-like dynamic out of solid-state amps. You can't always do it on overdriven sounds or it gets too overpowering, although on the Tremoverb you can! My usual settings in the Blues mode are quite similar, though with a bit more mid and a bit less treble usually (and gain about 1-2 o'clock, MV about 10 o'clock). This amp also has a lot of reverb, which I forgot - I usually run it about 10-11 o'clock on the clean channel and a little lower on the Red... and I like reverb, but that's plenty.
