Hello All:

I know someone selling a Mark IIa combo built for him by Randall Smith in 1980. He played it for about 6 hours and put it in climate controlled storage. The thing is basically new. It has a 1x12 extension cab. The combo and extension are made from some kind of rare walnut wood for New Guinea. The amp has the original Sylvania 6l6's (with 6 hours on them) and it looks like EV speakers in the combo and cab.

The owner will provide a history on the amp. I have no reason to question his claim that it was made for him by Randall Smith. We're in the Bay Area and I know many people who have been in the music business for years here who have been involved with Mesa Boogie and Randall Smith over the years.

Looking to flip this if I can get it for the right price.

Thanks,
Ron

This is the section where mesa stuff is listed for sale...

looks like the hardwood cabs will be worth more than the amp itself. a mark IIA head might sell for $500 to $600. Depending on the grade of the wood, the combo cab could add $250 to $350 to the price, and the extension cab depends on which type and speaker it has. A thiele maybe another $500? A quad of ANOS STR 415's maybe $150

Also RCS may have built most of the boogies at that time, or at least he was more involved with production at the time, though maybe some will get excited to have an amp with RCS on it. It's cool, but I don't think it translates into big extra value. RCS probably didn't build it special for the owner, unless he/she was famous... like Keith Richards or something. Way back when, Boogie was mail order, so you call them up and they build it for you.

Plus if it still has a fetron, a buyer would rather a 12ax7, and it probably needs a cap job/service.

Maybe if you just flipped it, you might sell it all for $1400 to $1500? There isn't a huge market for the IIA, but they are nice amps. People will be more interested with the woods.
don't take my word though... research a bit

Thanks for the reply Zodiac. I put this in classifieds because I hope to have it listed soon - if I decide to buy and flip it. Figured this would be a kind of pre-view.

Turns out the amp is a Mark IIb. It was hard to tell from the pictures but the owners manual says its a IIb.
