Hi from a new forum member! :D

I'd be glad if some of you could listen to my personal myspace and my band's one:

Here you find some solo edit of the tunes from various band I am playing guitar at the moment....my favourite is the "As The Thread Meets the Blade" Netherfall solo.......
http://myspace.com/robertobottillo

And here are the full netherfall tracks. Our best song IMHO ("As The Thread Meets the Blade") isn't there, though....
http://myspace.com/netherfall

But on the end of "each fallen leaf" there is another solo.....what do you think about it? Good, terrible  , expressive, boring?

I played guitar, recorded and "produced" the band....

Any opinions, tips, advice on the band, on the sound, vocals/ist, everything is well accepted.

Please note vocalist is our former.....we're re-recording the vocals with our new singer (that's why we aren't releasing new songs at the moment), so your suggestions will be surely keeped into consideration while I'll be remixing the songs  !

Thanks for listening!

Roberto

Relax your being paranoid!

Actually I like you’re playing allot!! Your solo on "As The Thread Meets the Blade" sounds awesome very tasteful. The mix is a bit thin sounding to my ears. And the guitar tone also, where you using modeler like a POD just seem to be lacking something and a bit too much effect. Or even just alter the reverb settings with a bit more diffusion, and use less of it and try some more delay to still give you that of in the distance sound. Try a stereo delay also, you can get some nice placement in the mix.
I like the tone on “Pride of Love” much better and allot less effect (and another great solo)

“Lymph”, again guitar sounds like a molder to me, sounds very thin and too much gain a bit on the fizzy side.

That’s it really.

I don’t know what your using to record with amps and so on, so it is easy for me to sit here and criticize.
But bottom line the songs are pretty good, (I did kind of tuned out the singer, since you said you were getting another anyway) and I like you playing allot!

Hi 6L6C,
thanks for yours comments, they were really appreciated!

I too founded the guitar tone a bit thin, but adding bass and mid bass made it boomy and muddy, and not really fat.....I guess it's because tone and not eqing is what is lacking...howewer when re-mixing the tune with the new vocal track I will spend some more time with the guitar tracks on lymph guitars and on the solos.

That is a v-amp modeler....recorded with no effect (later added through plugins). I will try less reverb mix (adding diffusion) and will add a a stereo delay as you suggested.
I cannot remember exactly, but probably used no delay at all on the solo....

In Pride of Love I used a guitar virtual plugin (guitar rig), glad you like the tone there, it was really challenging to achieve....in fact I prefer the v-amp, but you're right saying it sounds thin in comparison....

I will update the songs in few weeks (months, depending on the new vocalist), any advice about the mix "fattening"?
drums and bass tracks are to be investigated?

Got a suggestion
Stay away from that plug-in! (work with the V-amp for now)
1. For guitar rhythms use your V-amp and back off on the gain a bit double the tracks (play same part twice) pan them hard left and right that will fatten it up allot but without the flubby sounding low end.Use same guitar and V-amp settings, but of coarse experiment!

2. Another thing you could do is a form of re-amping (you can even do this with your existing recording’s) basically solo out the track you want (say guitar rhythm), setup another track to record grab a microphone, maybe a large condenser microphone. And yep you guessed it hit record and be quiet till your done, this will add some ambiance to the performance. (use both tracks during the mix)This can work well for guitar solos also. Depending on the microphone you are using stay around half a meter away from the monitor speakers. (Really depends on allot of factors) so will probably do this a few times before you find the sweet spot with the microphone.

I just kind of re-read my post and it kind of came off like I’m slamming the Guitar Rig plug-in and I don’t mean that, you might even find yourself doing all of your solos with Guitar Rig

So you mean - stay away from guitar rig for rythm recording only?

I will try lowering the gain, and pan completely to left or right....in fact the guitars are already two different tracks, recorded with the same sound, opened in stereo, but not 100% left and 100% right (70%, ATM).....and not always sounding toghether in the exact same parts (to make the mix less boring).

The reamp thing is interesting, will try that, seems a good tip to add ambience and thickness....the resulting track is going to be centered in the mix, I presume...

Thanks a lot for your suggestions,

Rob

No you can use whatever you like, but the V-amp MIGHT give you a more focused and tight sound and you can add the “ambiance” track as you like.
Just take a real simple song record a verse maybe a chorus and just overdub your little heart out (maybe keep some notes) mix and match and see what works best for you.
Since you’re presently using two rhythm tracks you can try something like this.

RHY1 RHY2 + 1 ambiance track (create ambiance track using RHY1 or RHY2 not both)
RHY1 RHY2 + 1 ambiance track (create ambiance track using both RHY1 & RHY2)
Same as above but 2 ambiance tracks just create 1 at a time RHY2 then RHY2
Even with examples above you can go nuts (and I have) during a mix.
As far as an ambiance track no it does not have to be up the middle in the mix in fact panning it will give it a more in depth feel. Needless to say too much of anything can become slop.
Of course don’t forget I’m not a pro and nothing is set in stone, like anything it depends what you hear in your head and just making a plan to achieve it. This is just stuff I have done in the past when forced into certain conditions.
