Hi guys,
I currently own a 2 channel Triple Rect. with a 4x12 trad. Rect., and a 2x12 rect. I'm totally new to what racks do or can do, such as the: Mesa Stereo Simul-Class 2:90, and Marshall rack units like the JMP-1, and the Marshall EL34-100/100. What do these do???? Thanks

I read the article and I'm still a little confused. So would having a pre-amp and power amp basically make my total volume louder and have built in effects because of the pre-amp? I'm not really sure what it would do for my set-up.

A rack setup won't necessarily make you louder. It depends on what kind of power amp you get.

Most (but not all) pre-amps don't have any effects built in.

If you don't know why you would need a rack setup, odds are you don't need one. :)

I went from a Mk IV combo to a rack setup for a couple of reasons, but mainly to have stereo effects without having to buy another amplifier, and more tonal options than the Mk IV alone could give. I switch it all with midi and always have instant access to ten "channels" and two effects parameters such as delay level and overall volume.

For a touring musician, having all their equipment in a rack makes setup and teardown much easier. All the roadie/tech/musician has to do is is plug in the speakers, guitar, and foot controller (if any), and they're set. Many buy wide racks and rack their amp heads/combos instead of going with seperate pre-amp/power amp setups.

If you're happy with your sound "as is", your rack could be as simple a power conditioner, tuner and effects in a four space rack sitting on top of your amp, or you could not have a rack and use pedals for any effects.

Racks are as simple or complex as you need them to be.

Thanks for all the info. Ya I'm just trying to learn more about this stuff. ok what If I had a Marshall EL34-100/100 or Mesa Stereo Simul-Class 2:90, with a Marshall JMP-1. What would this do for my set-up I listed above? Sorry for being annoying. Thanks

Yea the JMP-1 is a preamp and the other 2 units mentioned are power amps so you would plug the JMP-1 into either unit and then into a cabinet

in your regular amplidier head, you have a preamp and a power amp. in a rack, the preamp and poweramp are sperate, meaning you can get whatever preamp/poweramp you want, in any configuration. it also means you can put other units in any part of the signal chain you want. and you can hook all your units up to midi and cange presets on all of them with one press of a button. but thats going into the more technical side of racks. basically, you are separating the two parts of a head, the pre/power section. but a good rack will cost you alot of money to get together.

EDIT: oh and no it doesnt increase your overall volume. it depends on how loud you set your poweramplifier.
