Hi

I recently acquired this boogie 1x12 combo in a trade. I dont have a lot of experience with mesa stuff but apparently this is a mark model which is fairly collectible and possibly worth a few $$. I thought I would post some pictures here to see if anyone could help me work out what it is exactly. Im a little skeptical because its been neglected and Im not overly impressed with the tone, I can get a decent clean out of it at best after twiddling with all the knobs, it definitely needs a service and probably new tubes. I couldnt believe how filthy this thing was!

Thanks

You will probably never be happy with the tone of this amp. It's great for country and jazz and such but just won't get you into serious metal heaven. Given it's age it would need a great deal of service anyway. Maybe we can work out an amenable deal or trade. These other guys are going to try and convince you it's somesort of valuable collectors item but in it's present less than pristine condition it would only spur the interest of say someone like me who is familiar with the restoration of mark series amps. Don't get caught up in all the hype surrounding old tube amps. Check out the POD HD500 now there's a work of art. **** I have a Digitech amp modeling pedal which can kick ass on a tube amp and is easier to carry to the gig. Okay first of all it has the X101 xport tranny which is nothing but a hassel; constantly having to decide which country you're in and such is just too much to think about when you have brutalz racing through your frontal lobes. And who ever the idiot was that ordered this amp without the simulclass option probably had the amp set up for pedal steel guitar or accordian. Maybe it was voiced to mic up his clarinet for The onboard Graphic EQ is nothing but a tone sucker; makes the amp sound like all the midrange goes away or something. Then the tube driven spring reverb ya know man who was this guy Dick Dale. I'm sorry you got jabed on your swap so I'll try and help you get rid of the pos and hook up with a really kick ass Randall SS amp or nifty Fender Cyber amp.

All sarcasm aside, it's definitely a Mark IIC (RP11A preamp board), 60/100 watt with reverb, graphic and export transformer. The "+" over the power cord shows it's a C+. You can perform the loop test to ensure it's a C+. Read this:http://forum.grailtone.com/posting.php?mode=edit&f=27&t=49483&p=354580

In short, you have one of the most collectible and valuable of all Mesa amps, aka the "Holy Grail". The serial number will also determine the monetary value, but not necessarily the tone quality of the amp. C+s that came directly from the factory as a C+ command a premium over Mark IIs that were later converted to a C+. If I were you, I'd contact board member Boogiebabies (the guy who wrote the "C+ Guide For Dummies") about having him blueprint this amp. This could be worth well over $2,000 all cleaned up and properly maintained. But then again, when you play it after Boogiebabies gets his hands on it you probably won't want to sell it. :D Congratulations!

8) Ignore the post of Restless Rocks

Seeing this pics and the "+" on the chassis it should be a IIC+. The Graphic EQ looks like an upgrade. It says HRX. So it came without the Graphic out of the factory. But The faceplate is the right Pull Deep faceplate. X101 Transfomer. RP11A Preamp Board. Well! Nice grab! I also have the same amp with the same features and it's great! And for Metal even better comparing it to my Simul C+. If you have the feeling it needs a doctor, get it to a tech. And take dodger advice and contact Boogiebabies :)

Oh! Welcome to the C+ family :)

Thanks fellas that was great help! I havent run the loop test but the serial number falls in between 12500 - 12550 which after reading the IIc+ guide indicates thats what it is. Little did I know at the time of collecting this boogie that it has the potential for one of the best overdriven sounds around!! I am very keen to restore this amp back to its former glory, so is it best to send it to the Mesa shop or do they not service their amps so its best to have someone on the forum look at it (boogiebabes?). I would also like to get a headshell so would Mesa have an issue with receiving an amp with a Mesa replica headshell and tubes other than their own i.e. NOS tubes? Or should I just send the chassis?

If you are near the east coast (USA), Ed (Boogiebabies) and George (gts) can hook you up with all your restoration and headshell needs. If you are near the west coast, you can send your chassis to MESA, get it serviced and shipped back in a new head cabinet. 8)

Awesome, thanks for helping out guys!

I know the following is answered easiest by speaking to Mesa direct but Im based overseas and the timezone mismatch makes calling very difficult so if you can please share your experience dealing with Mesa in regard to the following:

What would you estimate the cost of a new black vinyl head cabinet and restoration/maintenance work to be roughly? (based on the amps poor condition - tubes supplied by me). Roughly how long will it take Mesa? Do Mesa require full payment up front or just a deposit then full payment on completion? Do they use Paypal? Should I just ship to the companys address or do I have to specify a particular person/department?

Cheers
