Hey guys as a wah newbie, I would love to hear your thoughts.

So I just got a CryBaby (original) the cheapest one... In store, I tried it through an Orange, and thought sweet.

Just got it setup through my Mesa at home, and yuck!

Thins out the sound a bit, makes the tone too bright, and the phasing even sounds different to the test model in store!
Fun to use in subtle amounts yes, but this isn't the sound I was hoping to hear when I plugged it in.
(Thins out and brightens my tone a bit too much I think, maybe the sweep isn't adjusted the same as the demo I tried?)

*I then stupidly enough, tried it through the loop.... And discovered - DUMB IDEA MORON!

The amp squealed like a ***** for a couple of seconds, before I quickly hit the loop switch off.
(is this stupid mistake known to screw anything up?!?)

What do I do here, exchange it for a different wah? What pedal "works" with a Recto? How stupid am I really?

Any help would be great!

You probably did no damage placing wah in effects loop. Some people actually place the wah after their distortion to get this synth type of sound, but like myself and a majority of others, the rule applies: Guitar->Wah->Amp.

If the crybaby was too thin, look to the adjustable crybaby Q or the zakk wylde. Another good one is the mark tremonti wah. Even the ibanez weeping demon is pretty good.

What would Jimi do?

1. Remove the bottom cover. Leave the battery attached. Press the foot pedal all of the way forward (like you are about to switch it on).

2. Lay the wah on it's top with the electronics facing you, making sure that the foot pedal is still pressed forward. Now plug your guitar and amp into the wah, and notice which way the pot turns to get the sound you want. For example, if there's too much treble, you want to back off on the position of the pot when the wah is toe-down.

3. There is a plastic stick with teeth on one side that sticks through the wah housing. It attaches the top foot pedal to the gear-toothed pot shaft. The stick is held in place against the shaft by a nylon bushing. Loosen the screw that holds the nylon bushing in place and push the bushing to the side so that the stick is no longer held in place.

4. Use your fingers and turn the gear-toothed shaft on the pot to where you get the maximum treble tone desired.

5. When you get the sound you want, push the bushing back into place and tighten the screw.

6.Turn the wah over and test. Rinse and repeat.

Hope this helps. :D

It will help with the brightness at toe-down (but be careful not to go too far and have the pot hit its end stop at heel-down, which can break it), but won't help with the overall thin-ness of this pedal, which is also partly caused by the slight volume loss it has. You don't notice it so much with amps with more midrange at a higher frequency, but the Rectifier tone is darker and more scooped in the area where the wah peak needs to work, so you hear it as a loss of volume and power - worse the more gain you put on.

You need a wah pedal with a lower or adjustable frequency center and preferably an adjustable volume boost. I use the Dunlop CryBaby 535, the old one with just four settings and a boost not the Q. I think this one may be the same as what they sell as the BB535 now, but I'm not sure. Either that or the Q should work. I have mine set with the frequency one notch below the standard CryBaby setting, and the boost up 10dB. Like that it seems to work perfectly with the boost off on a clean sound and on for distortion.

heres what i felt stupid about when i bought my wah pedal:

use your tone knobs to taste :p

Just pulled it apart, loosened off the nut on the pot and gave it a tweak, about to try it out!

Cheers for all responses guys, will let you know shortly if interested.

Thanks heaps.

And verdict is, very cool to play with now, just tweaked it about an eighth of a turn and the phasey sound with toe down is improved, and the sweep with heel down is good too, pretty well got the sweet spot of "jimi" sounds somewhere in the middle of the sweep.

Sounds sweet mainly on ch3, which is pretty much only where I wanted to use it.

Thanks heaps guys, again I take my hat off to great advice given through the Boogie Board!

get a Budda wah.... dont mess around mang. Its the best wah ever and you can adjust it the same way.

have heard good things about this wah pedal but wasnt sure it would go with a recto

rest assured my friend... it could make a pignose sweep if it were open.

I run it with a roadking and I have both the old and new Budda wah's the new one that looks like an Iron from the 50's has RF filtering so you wont get the sports scores broadcast!

Sounds interesting but for the way I want to use it, playing subtle licks and stuff this CryBaby is working well.

Not interested in using it for solo's or anything like that, all that stuff has been overdone in the past and is deadwood IMO.

If youre feeling frisky and handy with an iron check these out

my morley is giving me horrible interference, maybe ill have a look at upgrading. i do know that buddah make pretty high gain amps but just from the reviews of it i saw on youtube it sounded a lot more of a clean, vocal wah. is the new one the purple one with silver expression pedal?
