Hi,
I'm looking for something cheap to play at home.
VHT amps are well known but I never tried them.
Now I'm thinking about their cabs, they are really cheap and I was thinking about the Special 112. The problem is there are both closed and open backs.
Open back - celestion g12h30 speaker
closed back - VHT chrome-back custom speaker

Has any of you tried these speaker? What do you reckon should I go with? both cabs are same price 99€
PS: I will plug them into a Mark5

VHT used to be a company owned by Steven Fryette. Another entity managed to obtain rights to the VHT brand. I think the VHTs under the new ownership are made in China, but I could be wrong. Steven has been, and still is, making his amps under the Fryette brand...

+1

They are indeed made in China and are in no way related to the VHT of old. Easiest way to tell if it is made in China is if you think to yourself "wow that's not a bad price at all". Because you will not think that if it's an original VHT!

Worth every penny though for sure.

Read a lot of opinions like yours.
I'm going for the laney gs112. Is for bedroom practice.
Is cheap and sounds like a good cab. At least Laney has something to show for

The VHT Special 6 Closed Back cab with the chrome speaker will impress you if you do metal or high gain. For blues or classic rock not so much, unless you like compressed tight bright edgy sound. I put a perfectly good Tone Tubby in it and it basically ruined the sound of the Tubby. I even took the back panel off (it's very tight, so be careful how you pry it off) and still could not get "my sound" out of it. The speaker was nicer than I expected, very similar to the Tubby in appearance and size and weight (except for the chrome finish - not sure why they put a chrome finish on a speaker in a closed cab?) but the fact remains that it still says "Made in China" on the box. It was very, very different from the old used VHT amp I played at the used gear store a few months back. I put the Tubby back in my closed back solid pine cab and instantly had "my sound" back again!

My impression is the cab is made for metal players and high gain people. It is very well built, solid as heck, but I suspect it will sound good only with a very narrow selection of specific speakers.

I made my mind (and this not because that one is made in China, if its well built and sounds good i'll take it)
and i'm going with Blackstar htv112, i'm just waiting for money which should arrive by the beginning of Feb.
It's cheaper than laney, a bit more than the VHT but almost the same and I read that it is a lot better!
Celestion 70/80... i believe it will deliver...

Don't underestimate the Celestion 70/80. I don't usually like Celestions, but the 70/80 will deliver IF you take the time to dial it in and get it just right! Enjoy!

I'm not worried.
I'm the kind of guy that likes to try everything everyones says doesn't suit my needs.
I bet I'll like this speaker (specially since i already have a cab with v30s) and i can mix them both.
