I am a bit new at the recording thing and granted I am just using a cheap Fostex unit without any post production but I am interested to see if I'm improving.

definitely better the second... do you use reverb as a master effect (active on all the tracks)? if so this could be the reason for a non-perfectly defined mix in my opinion (I would lower the effects' level on drums in every case). However good work!

Actually the drums are part of the backing track. I only recorded the guitars.
 
Dude it's so obivious and you didn't see !!
Throw away this awful backing track.
Leave just your guitars,I hope one to the left and one to the right.
Leave them dry,no delay or reverbs,no efx at all.
Than we'll hear your guitar :wink:
 
Sick man! One of my favorite tunes off Images and Words, I think you got the tone down pretty **** close! The second one sounds the best to my ears.
