will a tungsol in v1 change my tone alot or must I also change the v1 b tube too.
i want to open up a little in my Roadster. brighter so to speak

v1a and v1b are the same tube. 12ax7s have 2 sides to them. So one Tungsol would be all you need.

I got a Roadster head last week (used) and it came with all the stock tubes. The preamp tubes were all Mesa Chinese. To start out with I dropped a Tungsol in V1 and a JJ in V2 (the rest will be swapped as well, but I was curious how far this would take me... pretty far). It really pulled the curtain back and opened up the amp while keeping it warm. I can really see why it's mentioned so often. I feel bad for the previous owner having owned the amp and never knowing it could sound like this...

yeah did it today. It is a slightly difference. a little more bright
I must try a little more ...but so far so good

TS is the best pre-amp tube at this moment IMHO. My triple rec has all TS pre's.
Better keep a couple of Chinese or JJ's on-hand for those cathode follower positions.

Definitely. The TS tubes in v2 and v5 WILL fail eventually taking out your amp until replaced. If you gig I would swap those two tubes out with Chinese tubes immediately. I learned the hard way ;)

It's V3 & V4.

Actually it's v3 and v5. I just had a typo earlier. 100% positive on this
You're 100% positively wrong.

For the Triple Recto it is V3 (tone stack driver) & V4 (FX Loop Buffer).

For a Roadster or RK it would be V3 (tone stack) & V5 (FX Loop)

Read the post I linked for clarification.

Guys, thanks for the heads up on this... I have all TS's in my triple rec for about a year without problems. I use my amp at home and at band rehearsals/gigs.

What will eventually go wrong with these tubes? They just blow? Or can you hear them go bad? The past weeks I noticed some sort of high pitched squealing sounds coming from my speakers , thought it was the central heating of my house causing interference or something (my "studio" is on the second floor where the boiler is).

By chance I switched the V3 TS for a TAD last week.
