today just tried experiment whit v1 in mark iv. i tried tung sol 12ax7 gold pin and it has less volume!? then i put normal tung sol 12ax7 and even less volume :? ....is that normal whit tung sols? eh12ax7 it has volume like mesa12ax7. they are all new tubes. :(

I just find out when is swich on tweed power there is very low gain on lead mode(lead gain 8 pulled-lead drive 8pulled).on full power is normal. Only with tung-sol :?WITH MESA TUBES IS OK, WHY?????????

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I had the same problem with my heartbreaker. I replaced the tung-sol in V1 and it worked fine. Other people seem to be able to run these in V1 with no issues.

Bad tubes maybe??

Try it with another Tung-Sol. New Sensor apparently has QC problem. Buy the tubes from vendors that test their tubes. Mine has been good so far.

V1 is by far the most sensitive position in the amp. Differences in tubes will show up the most there. If one brand is know for (fill in fancy advertizing adjective here), it will really show up when you put it into V1.

I bought 2 from a well respected vendor. I purchased these at different times. And they both behave the same.

Who would you recommend for a vendor that would test?

Thanks!

People like Mesa/Boogie and Groove Tubes for instance test all of their tubes for gain. Unless a vendor states that you are buying gain tested/selected tubes, then you are not. So you may get any old rubbish. You may be lucky, but you may not. You save money in theory, in practice you're better off spending more for the best of the bunch. What do you think happens to the tubes that are under spec ??

I have been struggling with finding a decent tube for V1 in my Mark IV lately. The new production Tung-Sols sound HORRIBLE in V1 on my amp. I tried both the standard 12ax7 and the gold pin versions. No volume problem, but they just sounded really fuzzy. I like high gain, but this was just bad tone.

After trying several new production tubes I got into the NOS game and found several tubes that work well in V1. So far, the Amperex ecc83 seems to be the best, but that will vary based on your amp and your ears.
