Any recommendations? I really dig the old coke bottle recto tubes 5u4g.

but what about other brands and NOS. I wouldn't pay more than 100$ for a pair. also, how about preamp tubes.

thanks.

Try asking Doug at Dougstubes.com

Great guy, very knowledgable.

I use Tung-Sol in V1, Hi-Gain JJ in V2 and Shuguang 9th gen in the rest of the preamp sockets.

I like Ruby 6L6's, Shuguang 6L6's, Ruby EL34's and JJ KT-77 in the power amp sockets, so far.

I agree with kramerxxx....Doug is great to deal with. I have dealt with him twice now and most recently just this week.
I can't speak to the rectifier tubes as I have not experimented with them, but Doug did make some suggestions on those for my 3ch DR. I just decided not to invest in them just yet.
I went with a Tung Sol for V1 and all the rest 9th gen Chinese (balanced in V5) and a quad of SED 6L6. I like this combination much better than the JJs all around (minus a Mullard in V1).
Tone is clearer and the lows are much tighter. I am also noticing more sparkle or brigtness to the high end, but in a smooth good way. I seem to be able to manage the presence and treble better now w/out it getting too harsh.

can you describe the tone differences between the tall 5u4g and the JJ rect tube? I find the former to be very tight and clear, no sag, which is what I like. it's smooth, not harsh, and can i even say a tad bright as opposed to dark. how would the JJ compare?
