So my head was dropped tonight, f'd my rectifier tubes (not worried about them i play diodes) and f'd a poweramp tube. PREAMPS ARE OK, THANK GOODNESS

Can I replace just one 6l6gc str440 or do i need to get a matched pair or matched quad? (not sure how the matching and biasing works even though i know its fixed bias.)

its a dr solo head btw.

Also, any suggestions as far as getting an upgraded 6l6 tube? Tight, punchy, metal is the goal. (All that Remains, Killswitch sound, drop c....need a tight bass response good articulation and ability to cut thru the mix

I have some awesome NOS preamps in so I was like well i may as well see if anyone can suggest a tube they've had alot of luck with in the DR's. The tone I am happy with, just didn't know if a better quality tube would improve upon it.

-SED Winged C's?
-TAD?
-NOS 6l6's?

What about KT66 or KT88?

How are all these in comparison to the Stock Mesa STR 440's?

Thanks a bunch... Def a bummer when I get the sound I have been looking for dialed in Wednesday and play a show and break half my tubes on Friday!

I love the SED =C='s in my Roadster. I've never tried the TAD, but I prefer the SED's over both the Mesa STR-440 & JJ 6L6GC. To me, they are almost a mix of the Mesa & JJ characteristics with a strong bottom and smooth top end. I have a quad from doug's runnning at ~32 mA and I love them.

As far as NOS, I'm just starting to 'dabble' in the preamp myself. I don't want to affect my warrenty, so maybe when that's expired I'll look into a bias mod and give NOS 6L6's a go! :D
